In all this media speculation and near panic about Coronavirus there is a very sensible thing one can do - check your will is up to date or, if you have not made one, make one. Also let your executors know where the will is kept.

I am not trying to be morbid.

As Jones used to say 'don't panic', I would suggest I am more at risk driving to work than pegging it from Coronavirus.frown

Hi Tony, well if the drivers in your area are anything like the ones near me, I'd say you are exactly right!

Between that and my wife's cooking, I haven't got a chance.......smiley

Particularly when there is a pandemic in full swing and all the paramedics are off sick.

I would suggest that at least one major reason for doing as much as possible to reduce transmission is the protection of vital services which will cost lives if they are compromised to any great extent. I would expect when all this is over the figures for indirect deaths (not from the virus itself) is going to be high if it really gets into the general population.

The other thing to consider is a Power(s) of Attorney, though it's quite expensive.
Not panicking about the current situation, as I was in the process of setting one up before the present situation arose.

JA, Bill Chugg and Peak4 - should i assume that you reacted similarly to the confirmed statistics for the annual influenza toll? To paraphrase ... 'morbidity is as morbidity does'.

You don't need a solicitor to do this, but make sure you fill in the forms correctly, as if you get it wrong you have to pay the fee to the government again next time you submit it.

Power of attorney

Link to government power of attorney site. My wife did both for her mother without using a solicitor and, due to the MILs circumstances, without charge.

It seems as though the world is getting paranoid about Coronavirus, so far the mortality is estimated at less than normal flu, each year hundreds die from influenza in this country and we don’t get this worked up about it. I recently had flu with complications and spent four days in hospital, it made me realise that influenza complications can be serious, but we just take it in our stride. I am not advocating that we don’t treat Coronavirus as serious but we need to put it in perspective, if we take all the precautions that we can, if we get it then 99% of us should survive.

Just suppose for a moment that Corona Virus was 100% non fatal (which it isnt) but that 50% of the workforce were off sick at the same time (which they probably will not be). How many would die just down to the non provision of vital services and medicines. Delaying cancer treatment will cost lives, diabetics without insulin supplies will be in real trouble to name but 2 examples. Slowing the spread will ensure that concurrent absentee numbers will be reduced and the support services we all rely on will be maintained as well as possible. I have invented the percentages just to make the point that we may find it's the fall out that hurts us most.

That said I'm sure that the majority of us will just do the best we can.

There are some here who shoot and eat squirrel. Is the wildlife vector known? Some have blamed bats.

I think it is down to some bunch of witch doctors hassling the poor old pangolin. Lovely little ant eater type things minding their own business, munching ants and termites in Africa and some idiot wanted to make soup out of them.
