Have you got? I was once told that a “good” mechanic has lots of hammers! laugh

I’ve just had a tool tidy and counted over 20. Plus a few more in the house and I got up to 27 and probably forgot another couple hiding somewhere. Not sure how I collected that many. I know I bought a couple because they looked nice and I’d still like one of those Japanese jobbies.

Your post immediately made me think of Karl Marx, who wrote "In Birmingham alone 500 varieties of hammers are produced, and not only is each adapted to one particular process, but several varieties often serve exclusively for the different operations in one and the same process".

My reaction on reading Das Kapital was that I didn't own enough hammers, something I have been trying to rectify for some years, which probably means I'm not cut out to be a Marxist. Unfortunately I only get into double figures by including claw and cross-pein hammers. Probably my most used are two sizes of Thor copper/rawhide mallets though - can I count those?

A couple of duplicates have gone since that photo, but about five more are not included Not counting he three sledges. They are tools and, like chisels, there are different sorts.

I have 5 hammers - 2 ball pein, heavy and light; and 2 nylon faced Thors, also heavy and light. The light Thor has one rubbery face, but I never use that. Also a heavy club hammer, just for fenceposts - so I dunno if that counts.

Except for the heavy Thor, I've had them for 40 years.

I can't imagine why I'd want more.

You've started me thinking now.

On reflection, I probably have quite a few.

If I can find the Rowntooit, I'll go and count them.

Maybe ....

Daniel

Ah there you go, I forgot the copper and hide that lives on the milling machine. Well done Brian!

A lad at work retired and had 27 hammers but they were not all different, I think he had even more G cramps. I think my screwdriver and Allen key collection are a bit out of control.

I have a few but I have one very special 3lb lump hammer which goes everywhere I go and if one of my engines starts playing up I fetch the lump and lay it next to the engine and the problem goes away smiley

So a question for all you hammer buff's

why on the continent do they all use square headed hammers and here in the UK we prefer to use round headed hammers?

regards

Trevor

Toffee, chipping, sheet metal shaping set, hammers in my car and toolboxes, claws, lumps and sledges. Small medium and large ball pein likely are most used (small particularly for making gaskets). The electric nail gun means some are used less often these days, but still needed when away from grid power. Panel pins can be rather awkward with a large hammer! So most hammers are at least duplicated, for ease of location on different jobs.

I don’t count mallets as hammers - hide, copper, lead, dead blow, wood (including one for tent pegs and one for fence posts). There is even a coal hammer lurking somewhere in the garage.
