Thread: Why do modern car engines have different types of bolt type heads like Torx etc?
27/07/2023 17:58:17

I will never own or drive an electric vehicle, my wife and I are financially comfortable with our pensions but there is no way we could justify the over priced EV's, I couldn't tow with one, without spending stupid money, and I doubt anybody would build an electric Renault Kango with a ramp and lowered floor as there would be nowhere to put the batteries so my wife would be totally housebound. We live in a village where the local bus companies don't know what a regular bus service is so when my Renault and Subaru give up the ghost so will we.

Thread: Sheet Metalwork
27/07/2023 17:38:25

I've had the smaller size from Machine Mart for several years and make round fuel tanks for my stationary engines using ex immersion heater tanks copper sheet, I've cut thin steel sheet with it. The rolls and bender work well for me as well.

My only criticism would be that I had to tinker with the guillotine table to get it to cut well.

My thoughts are its the car makers way of trying to stop the average man fix his own car by making the cost of specialist tools to expensive.

Thread: Do you need an oil change with less than 10,000 miles in 10 years?
13/07/2023 23:16:21

I run a 2 litre diesel Subaru Forrester and a 1.2 litre petrol Renault Kangoo, between them they total roughly 10,000 miles a year and regardless of miles they both get oil and filters changed at each annual service, sitting doing nothing for periods in our weather causes the engines to sweat and the moisture ends up in the oil, I even run them for s few minutes when not used to get the oil back around the engine, particularly the Subaru which recently sat for six weeks waiting for the village garage to find a time slot, he was extremely busy, to replace its clutch.

I was sat outside this afternoon sorting a load of imperial spanners i got from freegle when I heard the sound of a Radial engine, i looked towards Old Warden to see the Lysander following a Shorts Skyvan very closely I assume for photography purposes, they went around a couple of times and then disappeared, after about ten minutes i heard a flock of Merlins heading towards me attached to the Lancaster, a friend told me that his village, Bromham, was expecting a Fly by of it, when I saw her pass over she was heading due east.

Thread: Workshop Clock

You could buy an old but working wind up clock, my battery clock does the same, I think its the cool conditions in the garage, house temperatures are fairly constant and warm but my garage temperatures fluctuate up and down even during the summer.

Thats a Slingsby T67, the seats are side by side and has a petrol engine not a turbo prop.

sounds like you saw a Beechcraft T MK1 which the RAF replaced the Tucano with, its a tandem two seat trainer.

Thread: State Pensions - Notification thereof.
31/03/2023 20:16:20

My wife and I received ours on the same day a month ago, on a slightly off topic I got a email from head office about a pay rise, I'm retired but spend twenty hours a fortnight part time delivering medication for a local chemist, I read the email completely to find I'd not had a pay rise all they were doing was giving me the governments increase of the minimum wage, Cheeky Barstewards, cant really complain as its almost £1.00 an hour.

Thread: Left handed lathe.
11/02/2023 12:31:33

Gentlemen,

I may regret asking this but what or how is a left handed file.

Martin P

10/02/2023 11:40:01

I remembered something I did have problems with being left handed, I use to drive potty the range instructors , as a cadet in the ATC we used to regularly visit the firing ranges and muggins used to have the .303 rifle butt in my left shoulder and after firing a round I then had to take my left arm over the top of the rifle to reach the bolt, mounted on the right, to load the next round, they tried to get me to use the rifle on my right side but was deemed dangerous.

Is that better, it was meant as tongue in cheek.

Evening Gentlemen,

I'm left handed and was never forced to write right handed, my right hand is only there to balance the symmetry smiley

I use my left hand for everything but I do struggle a bit with standard micrometers and vernier calliper's when measuring work in the chuck, as regards the shovel I hold the handle in my left hand and the blade end with my right.

I've always assumed that left handers are more intelligent because we have to adapt and relearn to keep up with the rest of you smiley

Thread: POLYGONAL TURNING
06/01/2023 11:24:36

What I meant was that they designed a system to machine all sided shapes on fully automated machines, I know the process was prior to that as Wickman multi spindle lathes had the option of a pecker device on one of the spindles to create a hexagon, I served my time at a Lucas CAV factory where diesel injectors were made and we had over 40 Wickmans some fitted with the Pecker.

Wera Wuppertal designed these machines in the 1970's-1980's to make their hand tools using the lathe cutting tools geared to the headstock, they then went on to do the same principle using CNC control, the machines are used in car plants manufacturing gear box internals etc.

As a machine tool service engineer I worked on these machines and found them fascinating, to see a piece of round bar being turned into a triangle was interesting to watch.
