What occurred to me was the idea that a youngster starting in trades (anywhere in the world) would be glad to have a copy of the handbook regardless of edition and would likely use it for many years. He or she may well not have the money to buy a copy. I was lucky to be able to obtain one when I started out, and still use that very copy nearly every day at work. A real shame to see one abused this way.

"I have no idea what to use this for, no appreciation for its possible value to anyone else, therefor I turn it into a lamp"

Grrrrrrrr

Can't help feeling that all these comments miss the more basic point: why would anyone think that turning any such object into a lamp was useful (or even sane) anyway?

To paraphrase Ettore Bugatti (having been shown a type 35 with a Ford V8 engine installed) ...........

"When I am the Dictator the man who did this will go to the guillotine!"

I think it's a brilliant idea. Larry Phelan could make a fortune by doing the same to his Rotary Table! enlightened

I should be on the stage. There's one leaving in 5 minutes.

Oh dear!

Improved out of all usefulness.

I've been using the 11th edition for the last 30 years or so at work, has not failed me yet.

This is an example of how easily useful information is lost.

Should have just sold the book, you could well get that price for the book if it was in good nick.

The steampunk crowd would love it, I'm guessing that was the motivation.

Agree... & twentieth edition to boot, what a waste.

.

... is that part of the 'upcycling process ?

angel MichaelG.

.

From the advert:

This is a vintage machinery handbook 12th edition upcycled into a desk table lamp

.

Sorry: Forgot to say ... it's sacrilege.

You could have the same artistic effect, just place any old lamp on your copy of MH and when you need to look something up, merely removed the lamp! Honour upheld.

I used a pile of encyclopaedias as a bed leg in an emergency, it either that or take the other three off.
