Thread: Shipping delays and costs

there was a large amount of publicity about a year ago to a regular ?weekly rail link between China + Europe/UK - has this not proved economic or have global politics intervened?

When the largest ships hold 20,000 containers(according to Google) just how economic do you think shipping them by train will be?

According to reports it's being looked at it very seriously.

Thread: GWR green

In trying to colourise a photo that pre-dates 1927 several factors need to be borne in mind.

In that era colours where invariably mixed by "eye" from pigments of far inferior purity than available today leading to subtle variations even when brand new.
With dirt and atmospheric pollution the original colour often rapidly darkened resulting in a locomotive that had been in service two or three years being a very different colour to one that was ex-works.
One has only to look at engines on heritage railways to see the colour variation that occurs with time despite far more precise chromatography available to paint makers today.

In very simple terms "don't stress it".

Just to confuse issues further there are several shade of black.

Thread: Looking for foundry in Bolton area

Might be worth thinking about the foundry at Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Telford.

For some years I've used Roger and Noel several times satisfactorily for simple stuff. They have little control of the iron spec and are not really geared up to deal with cored work. I go to Wolverhampton or Dudley for anything a little involved..

Have I missed a trick? I'm sure there is a reason but just can't help wonder why anyone would want to run a rotary converter in this day and age.

Quite time consuming, if making all those gears on basic hobby kit? Possibly a job for 3D printing as an alternative?

John, did you cut the gears with profiling using the shaper, as opposed to making cutters for the different tooth counts?

I would expect aluminium gears would likely suffice, so easier to cut.

Still a good, satisfying project, all the same - this from someone who already has a QCGB on his lathe.🙂

Even 3D printed might work OK.

That would be my best guess as a former hospital engineer. Or it could have been part of an early rectal endoscopy probe.

Perhaps it was left behind by a visiting flying saucer wink

Rod

Were you to tell us where it may have been left could be "far too much information" winklaugh

Since Speedy is very closely based on the BR built (but GWR designed) 15XX pannier tanks you shouldn't have any trouble in sourcing the correct colour.

I am afraid I have to agree with John about Proxxon being under engineered.

I have popped a couple of Proxxon tools with motor issues similar to Dave's.

They have a useful range of tools and the price point is OK if the tools work reliably.

I needed a small hand held electric polisher and Proxxon had the only product at a price that I could justify, I bought the polisher and it works really nicely but for how long ?

About 20 years ago I had a series of Dremel tools have motor problems and vowed to never buy another Dremel, they did sort out the motor issues and I have had Dremel tools again.

What really needs to happen is for Proxxon to be bought out by Bosch like Dremel where, and then some people in Bosch would get the issues sorted out in short order.

I'm sure the likes of Makita or DeWalt could also sort them out too.

. . . . . . .

They want £3250 for a lathe that HASN'T GOT A PROPER BS1363 PLUG. This CANNOT be allowed. I'm shocked, or might be if I plugged it in.

. . . . . . .

Actually Dave the plus illustrated is to BS1363. A plug with sleeved live and neutral pins is BS1363A

T Wash is the stuff to use. Used extensively as body preparation by many heritage railways.

A swift google seems to suggest it is a Kennedy product.

Could you be confusing it with the Kennedy Hexacut? Or did they also do another design?
