Vacuum Cleaner Recommendations

After two years of sterling service in the workshop (my admittedly already clapped out and very old) Dyson vacuum cleaner has today hoovered up one swarf lump from the lathe and mill too many and finally died. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement ?

cant beat a Henry!

Nilfisk from machine mart on VAT free day......had my a few years now and its done everything from wood, metal, garden, driveway and even emptied the remainder of the hot tub....Fantastic.

Aqua Vac 420, mine is 34 years old, 2 3/4" hose, has excavated tons of soil, will still lift a house brick, though not get it down its hose. Down size is that its very noisy and probably obsolete.

Very powerful, very cheap, top reviews - mine is great

I bought a Nilfisk Aero 26-21 wet and dry vac when it was on offer at Screwfix. It's not too noisy has a power take off socket and a blow function which is handy. You don't need to use bags in it but they are quite cheap at Screwfix if you want to use them, I do.

I have a Wickes wet and dry vac that I bought 10 years ago. It has never had a problem. Plenty of suck and it also has a blow function. I noticed that they have a new model that is on offer at the moment for about £30, see:

I have a small Nilfisk machine it's great for cleaning up the lathe miller car etc. Bit expensive but worth the extra money.

I've got a henry in the barn, a karcher in the hobby shed and an einhell in the house.. all the same style with the einhell being biggest. But use bags in them..otherwise you spent all your time cleaning filters.. specially if it gets used for sweeping chimneys and sawdust. The einhell is slightly the most powerful.

Many moons ago a vacuum salesman visted my dad with a kerstar supreme.. about half the size of a henry. Part of his demo was to hook the hose to dad's hoover.. and with both switched on the hoover got sucked empty. He was also able to stick the mop attachment to the wall with the kerstars own suction... so dad bought it. They don't make domestic machines any more but if you want something really powerful then look them up...

Bought a powerfix (60Ltr) wet and dry from Lidle 4 years ago. Still going strong. It has a powerful suck and blow option. It has useful power socket that switches on the vacuum automatically when the item connected is powered up. Only problem I have had was caused by leaving coal ash in which when damp corroded a small hole. There is also a smaller one but I don't believe it has the power socket feature. Cost £39.99.

+1vote for the wickes one with the solid basket filter...

I had a Rowenta in the workshop for 35 years, but have just bought Henry number 3 which has replaced it. The Screwfix one is highly recommended by others, but very satisfied. No nonsense - and British.

+1 for Henry, I used one for years on the glass, it sucked up cullet and rubble, no problems.

I also have a cheap Wickes in the shed, similar performance, does swarf, sawdust etc.

Cheap wet & dry, screwfix? No bag and filter needs cleaning sometimes, but it is surprising how often the wet bit is needed.

I have already voted for Henry but I'm amazed at the very low cost of some modern equivalents, don't remember exactly what I paid for the Henry but £80 comes to mind and that was yonks ago. Looking at the spec of these machines they all seem suitable for mixed use in the workshop. Like many things nowadays more choice and lower prices all benefit the ME.

Another vote for a Henry (Nilfisk) I would not consider anything from Dyson having tried a few over the years all fell apart in short order. Just look in the local refuse tip at the amount of Dyson machines in the skip
