Well, what a day I've had-- Just got home after days / weeks in hospital. Just starting to realise what's in store for us all. Look on the bright side, we are generating ideas as I sit here. I am stopping now to get my breath back.

Hello-- I stay about 30 mile N of Aberdeen, and am in the middle of moving house etc. Last time I was on a Fortes platform was when it was in Hartlepool. No clubs that I know of round here, but I've only been 30 years. You will get plenty of advice on the forum.

I was talking to my mate the builder about this, to see if he came across off-cuts. He said just use foam boards on the floor, 1" is effective and no problem with the load. Will be trying this in about a month's time so will let you know.

We've done the trip a few times, but from the north. Last year got a bit of a shock, stalls selling broom besoms in the station yard and bus loads of eastern tourists. It is now the hogwart express, for the few like me who did not know it has something to do with a fictional childrens book. This is ok , except passengers wanted windows closed to keep out the cold. On return I opened windows so the exhaust could be heard, better than the other way I think.

Thanks for that- Foam sheet on the floor sounds good and cheap. The building is quite modern (70's 80's) so maybe up to standards. Will know a lot more in a month.

Hello, I know this has been asked before and I have searched the forum and the web but still confused. We have to move house soon because my feet are dropping to bits . I may well be lucky and have a small "bedroom" to use as a w/shop, but there are people living below and to the sides. Question is how to insulate/ isolate the noise . Have a 4"x 16" lathe and a bench drill plus the usual sundries. Thinking of sturdy bench in (say) 4"x6" timber with similar spreaders under the legs as a basic start. Any ideas welcome.

I have the pliers hammer thingy, looks exactly the same. Was my g/dads (who was a shoemaker among other things) and is now mine and in use.

I favour spiders for fly control, warm water and washing -up liquid for aphids etc. For outside biters ,midges and similar ,a wiff of diesel keeps them away. Also the local girls are attracted, they think you are a farmer.

We are lucky now, if you like beer, back in the 70's there were only 147 real beers left in Britain. I was lucky enough to be one of a group that drank a sample of all of them in a week. The pub in the Dales reminded me of one near Richmond that only served 2 pints or more. The landlord only had one arm and he was trying to cut down on walking.

It has just dawned on me that the strips are probably wrought iron, not mild steel. Lack of corrosion and age, also riveted construction. Good luck finding any, only place I've found in UK is re-rolled stuff, and not cheap. Just a guess.

At last- a topic I know something about ! Pub lager is cold ,just in case you do taste it. Round here a lot of beer now has the lemony taste, or elderflower. Some from the yeast , some from added flavouring. Most of the beer is from the north and the islands and is very good. I may have to go out now and check my facts.

Seems very thin section to me, is there a special reason for using it? I would go for something like 25x3 or 20x5. Easily bought, cut with angle grinder. Anything smaller may need tensioning to keep flat, corrosion will become a problem.

I've just measured my 2 scribers- masonery nails in dowels. One is 3mm dia and other 1.5mm dia. ,I've been using these for about 20 yrs and sharpened maybe twice.

Masonery nails- you might find one the right dia. and make good scribers.

I think I've posted this before ! If the drill you have has enough power for what you do ,then keep it. The table will deflect on any drill I have used when pushed hard. I use an old car scissor jack and a bit of wood under the table when needed.

Yesterday I stripped a small petrol generator to service and repair the electronics. Easy job ,all laid out on the bench, two socket sets open, multi meter, etc. etc.. This morning found that a bird or birds have taken up residence just above this bench. All covered with a nice white coating. I'm going to watch F1 on the telly and leave the stuff to dry, a nice little job for tomorrow.

I've never thought to make new races. One way to make a form would be to braze a suitable ball bearing onto a shaft, then grind a flat to half diameter. A fairly new bike I've been working on has pressed steel races, but I only go very slowly.

Just for those trying for the first time- Make sure you have all the clamps and packing etc. ready for use, some glues set very quickly. For best results you will need two or three clamps, packing /pressure pads on sole side, packing on the inside bottom, and packing on the shoe outside top. All depends on the shoe design and the clamps being used. check and test before using the glue. Sorry for egg sucking instructions.

Landrovers, plague pits ? As ex owner of several landies I must say I tried to keep leftovers out . My other half of brain cell has been used up keeping the 2CV's going.

Depends very much on the material (usually unknown). The last ones I did I used a hot glue gun, still there after a year of hard use. Also have used gorilla glue, works well on leather. Hot glue gun useful for lots of bodge jobs.
