The springs are .25mm wire size and 3mm o/d I recon the length would have been around 8mm to 10mm ??

Looking around there are some on eBay for about £10 for the three. Does anyone know anywhere else to look?

Finally got in in bits. There was a small circular spring clip stopping the top screwing off.
The jaws are ok it’s the springs that have collapsed.

happy days.

Thread: Brass I beam
23/12/2022 19:29:09

It’s not actually for me. A friend is making a Norfolk Wherry and he needs it in the length.

If it had been shorter I could have made it up but he really needs the length.

Thank you for the replies. I will investigate them all.

Thread: Coke for Brazing
16/12/2022 20:12:59

I started my working life working for my brother in law - his farther and he were blacksmiths/farriers. The forge was run on coke and his dad used to weld things together when taken from the forge. The glow of the metal was white hot and the joints were great when they were finished, all hammered together.

I am not sure where you can get hold of coke now? It was hard stuff and took some lighting, but when it burned it was like nothing else, little or no smoke or fumes.

Days long gone.

Sorry for being nostalgic.

Thread: Yet another knurling question.
11/12/2022 07:10:36

Has anyone managed to do any internal knurling. We make chucks for holding bottle caps. We usually line the bore with rubber but in time this wears off. Knurling would be great but I can not find anyone who has done this. Straight Knurling would be the best so that we do not mark the caps but have a better grip than the rubber.

Thread: WM18 rattling.
29/10/2022 10:35:25

My mini miller started to rattle. When I took the covers off there was a loose collar. It looked like iut should have been fastened to the timing disk for the Speedo however only one tiny part of the four attempted spotweld was or had been holding it in place.

The counter sender receiver has been running as well and stopped counting.

The whole thing was covered in really heavy grease.

For now I have left the counter off and the collar as well as I can not see what it’s purpose was.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thread: Working pressure
24/10/2022 16:02:47

I have an old drawing MAP publication drawing M24.

There are two copper boilers described on it and i am interested in the smaller one, which i am currently making.

The drawing states what size of engine they are suited to in terms of cylinder bore, how ever there is no working pressure included.

Using the formula from 'The model steam locomotive' book by the same author i can get the working pressure to 80PSI.

Has anyone made boilers to these drawings and if so what working pressure did you calculate and decide on?

Thread: 2” Durham and north yorkshire
23/01/2021 21:46:22

Mine is 4”. It was easy to make individual parts and use cap heads to fix it together. They are hidden.

The bow fork is actually a bit narrow. I made it out if 6mm plate instead of 1/4”. To take up the slack i made brass buttons and pressed them into each half bow.
