Thread: Building a car from scratch

Built this a good few years back, in fact it was why i bought my first lathe a Cromwell 3.5”. Mr Sparey’s book was a well thumbed tome back then.

Kawasaki ZX900 engine, very lightweight car, approx 450kg with 140bhp and an 11,000 rpm redline.

Made my own rear brake set up using Motorcycle disks and homemade alloy bells. And a mechanical paddle shift system with a quickshifter for clutchless up and down shifts.

Had lots of fun with it once finished, did trackdays at most of the British tracks, Harewood Hillclimb, Curborough Sprint, also plenty of drag racing at York Raceway.

Eventually sold it to lovely chap who drove all the way from Hungary with a trailer attached to collect.img_0065.jpeg

Nice car, I may even have seen it at Curborough I only live three miles away. I have helped build a few kit cars but never one of my own. I did build a few sporting trials cars and one for the long distance events loosely based on a Dellow.

I have not looked at mine for 20 or more years but think it is a very early edition of around 1912/1913. A more useful book for me is "Fowlers" engineers book, my edition is from 1933, with the internet I would not consider buying any more paper books now I am in my twilight years.

I run my lathe from a Transwave static inverter, it is OK but I wish I had spent the money and gone the rotary route.

Welcome along Jim from another Bridgeport user. Where are you in the world ?

Thread: Rotary Table And making A Radius.
17/07/2023 11:38:32

Radii can be achieved with a boring head and also by calculating many intersection points. The maths are square root of radius squared minus distance moved squared. easy with a CAD package but not essential.

Thank goodness that cnc put an end to standing for hours using a "Tree" boring head. I gave mine away.

Thread: Hearing aids - NHS or private?
06/07/2023 08:34:59

I have used aids for 20 + years and the NHS aids outperform any expensive private aids I have tried.

Plus one for an audiology check and update the program.

My proxy said, you probably won't get away with micron accurate work but it's certainly good enough for many years of use. He's had is running and is positive about it in general.

As soon as read that, I thought - who the h*ll expects to work to anywhere near that precision on a manual lathe.

I reckon to the nearest 10 microns is good - even very good - and good enough for most things turned on a lathe.

Anyone comment?

I agree, most of what I do is OK to a couple of thou (nuts/bolts/studs etc) I worked in some very high end toolrooms but we only chased the tenths accuracy when really needed.
