Bit late . I have the same S7 as you. Lots of info on this site about it and suggested reading. Do the setup when in its in its final location as the bench it not the sturdiness of benches. It took me about 3 goes before things settled down.

Last year I carried out a VFD 3 phase conversion, it's a worthwhile upgrade that you wouldn't regret.

I also have some spares left over from a gearbox upgrade, so if you need anything PM me to check if I have it.

Hi Ron,

You appear to have a similar setup to mine. I have fitted the VFD in a die cast box with a EMI filter as described by Robert A and ensured a good ground/earth from the motor and remote controller. I have not had any EMI or EMC issues. Checked with my SDR as spectrum analyser small amount of noise was detected.

If you fit the VFD in case make sure it has good heat sinking qualities.

You are correct about ali being a good insulator in its raw state due to the oxide build up. However there are coatings and anodising treatments that allow good conductivity. I suspect Jason's edge finder and mine for that matter are coated. We used to use Alochrom and later a altermative that provided an acceptable bond for EMI gaskets and grounding points within comms equipment. It was important to ensure that the surface was throughly cleaned before assembly. Bonding points should not use any type of washer that could break through the coating, if it did it would soon fail insulation checks due to oxide build up, if the joint was not airtight. I have seen bonding points that have used serrated washers that have then been coated with grease that seem to work.

I also believe that the bacteria that thrive in soluble oil when its stale cause this type of corrosion. It also give it the characteristic smell.

Progress indeed. In some cases I spent a week adding Plus Gas every night after applying heat. Worst case I applied the old oxy act torch to them. Another trick is if you do get some movement don't try to remove it in one go, rock back a forth and it will slowly but eventually yield. Noticed that Fuzz Townsend on car SOS advocates using this trick.

On a less serious note, never give the problem bolt a hint that you are in a hurry!

Yes but only when I am doing very fine work on small items, top slide is locked most of the time. As John did I also used hex socket bolts, not ball handles.

Yes I have used the method described in "The MEs workshop manual" by G H Thomas. His was for the top slide on a Myford S7. I have carried out the mod on both the top and cross slides on my S7. I have seen it done on other lathes as well.

+1 for MG's suggestion plus gas in excellent. However I have found the one sold at Lidle second best.

A bit of heat will also help, also light tap on bolt heads with a hammer breaks the rust lock on the threads. Be careful on any cast iron parts.

Slight digression. Am I imagining this, but didn't there be two types of plus gas. One in a red tin and one in a blue tin!!!

+1 for Baz's suggestion. Such as discussed in the "not the night clock news" episode years back. So they can't breed more mindless degenerates.

Cheap switches are false economy in my opinion. Over the last few years I have had to replace many on my equipment, mainly due to the plastic going brittle. I agree with Mike Poole's recommendation on make. CPC or Rapid are my first choice for these items. Only if I need them next day do I use RS or Farnell.

Definitely go for a protected start button variety. Also one with the correct IP rating if used in a location that is exposed to dust or liquid.

Replacement ordered. Bit ironic that with the ME came a letter about price increase and production costs etc.

I even checked it was not an April 1st edition.

I have a nearly complete Quorn Mk I that I picked up at a car boot sale for next to nothing. I am missing a few workhead casting which would help me to complete it. After all its a right of passage.

I resurrected this old thread on the 11th hopefully to get some answers to a couple of questions. So far no answers only responses regarding pro and cons of the Quorn. Some interesting can anybody out there answer my questions?

Are Quorn castings available from a UK supplier.

Neil you mentioned a few years ago MES were going to hand over the patterns etc to another well know supplier, did this happen?

Ian, can't find it on screwfix site but magic gel on the toolstation site might do the trick.

Ian , have you considered making some moulds and using a potting compound used in the external cable joining process. I think Srewfix sell it. Certainly TLC do.
