Thread: What defines BILLET … |
03/10/2023 08:01:08 |
during student years many eons ago I worked in a aluminium extrusion + rolling mill - the large slugs or billets of Ali straight from the refining plant were if I recall correctly about 6 inch dia and about 18 inch long - squeezed to give 10m or longer lengths of rail etc |
Thread: GOOD FOOD ! |
02/10/2023 20:50:49 |
they are reputed to come at or near the same spot each year - they are freezable but make sure, as I didn't, that they are doubly bagged as the taste will spread - quite strong + distinctive - apparently whole specimens just emerged are quite valuable if you have a local restaurant that does mushroom dishes. Thread: Dedicated Search Engine |
02/10/2023 09:56:08 |
in many ways it sounds like a development of swish-e a search mechanism for web sites that is free software (originally on debian Linux but now windows and possibly Apple ) can be setup to search all the types mentioned - I use it on my own private copy of my web site (relatively small with just 15,000 html pages) but was blocked by the current hosts as being a 'free' Linux system their engineers were only comfortable with windows based systems |
Thread: MEW subscription renewal cost |
25/09/2023 18:26:16 |
the direct debit leave you with repeated subscriptions thus its attraction to magazines etc also suspect it is cheaper than the costs charged by cards - one society I'm in notes that Paypal cost it about 4% of subscription |
Thread: 9/16 nut help! |
24/09/2023 14:57:05 |
do you not have a thread gauge - cheap + resolves such problems - the combination 14mm + 9/16 should indicate something is very confused |
Thread: Gib Adjusters and the English Language! |
21/09/2023 14:16:11 |
the OED has gibbe an iron hook from 1597 as part of things in a kitchen - then a gibby stick from late 18th C for a hooked stick noted as having a hard 'g' sound - doesn't sound much like the modern gib |
21/09/2023 13:45:45 |
gib in Manx (and I think in Irish) is the plural of gob (as in shut yer ..) which is beak, a pointed thing at the end, thus mouth of a fish - gib lane in Peel IoM leads to the Headlands ie a lane leading to a number of pointy things - gob is common certainly in NW England |
Thread: Measuring instrument storage. |
18/09/2023 17:33:24 |
there are hundreds of variants of 'really useful' plastic (I know dirty word) boxes - in this range are some trays of various sizes that fit within some boxes in the range - these can be used as the basis for workshop storage by building simple wood (or MDF) large drawers running on slides thus can take significant weight |
Thread: Radford Worm-Wheel Hobber |
12/09/2023 17:03:31 |
If you are a member of SMEE there were 2 online ie Zoom meetings this year of the Engine Builders Grp (both recorded) that dealt with the theory + building of the Jacobs gear hobber that was I think the basis of the adapt-a-Myford approach - membership is generally open and these recordings should be now available for members |
Thread: Interesting Curves |
10/09/2023 17:02:09 |
page not found ? on my browser |
Thread: 'Homeworkshop.org' Is the site down? |
31/08/2023 21:57:30 |
it would appear to have recently gained more modern features - adverts were last approved 30th August at 20:42 - so possibly it was down for these changes |
Thread: The beginning of the end for Copper telecomms |
30/08/2023 20:34:26 |
a few weeks ago there was a local power cut to around 100 houses (some fault in a local sub station) it also took out the openreach FTTC boxes in the street thus internet was lost even tho I could power up the router from a UPS - analogue voice over the copper pair still worked and allowed me to report the fault |
Thread: How come Windows XP can use Bing … |
26/08/2023 10:51:37 |
the XP's default setup to open almost anything offered to it made it too easy to exploit - it was possible by turning off the various options to be considerably more secure but lacking the necessary higher level crypto cannot open most modern pages so now best used to run unconnected to the web. |
26/08/2023 10:02:49 |
an old XP will not have the necessary code to open most https web pages - you can check as this forum uses the old standards and is accessible by old browsers but some of the image hosting sites use a higher level of security (actually a larger number of bits to hold the 'key' to the crypto) and these photos won't display |
Thread: OVO Energy not recognising Power of Attorney |
24/08/2023 16:44:52 |
sounds as tho getting your local MP involved might be the easiest approach |
Thread: 24V rectifier for lighting. |
18/08/2023 22:49:07 |
personally I'd look in the nearest Lidl as they often have reasonable quality LED lamps with flexible shafts - these can be removed from their heavy bases (usually a lump of concrete in a metal case) and the shaft fitted to a convenient mount fixed eg to the back plate - these lamps come with a 12v supply fed from the ac mains |
Thread: I need custard. |
13/08/2023 16:08:22 |
since, as I'm sure you know, proper custard is made by slowly cooking whisked egg yolks and sugar with whole warmed milk until it thickens (4 egg yolks, 3-4 oz sugar + 1/2 pt of full cream milk - thus for self sufficiency you need to purchase a cow, some laying hens and unless you are in the tropics grow sugar beet - though personally I would make a trip to the local supermarket for the raw ingredients. |
Thread: making BLACK chess pieces |
13/08/2023 13:24:39 |
why not consider stainless steel as white and brass as black - this will give the pieces some weight (corian would also be heavy but light plastic pieces always feel wrong) - the board could use brass + stainless steel foil glued on a wooden base |
Thread: Pack contains 4 servings |
05/08/2023 18:47:28 |
preserved meat is also on the watch list for nitrites which have suspected of being carcinogenic as for porridge/museli - oats are still cheap, waitrose muesli is considerably cheaper than the fancy brands and you can always dilute it with either their base (abt 2/3rd the price) or as i usually do jumbo oats tho now the 'health food' shops tend not to sell the large 5kg bags that worked out much cheaper |
05/08/2023 15:37:13 |
seem to recall some debate on R4 re these suggested servings - one suggestion was that some foods contained high salt, sugar etc that for any sensible portion would place them well over the daily allowance and thus rate a red traffic light under the current UK labelling arrangements - small portion sizes avoided this. |
