Link back to last year's thread for continuity. in case you missed a few of the last posts on that thread.

And the start of the year before because it has some interesting advice sometimes including details of the JS tailstock modification which newbies might want to look at.

For those who don't want to trawl through the thread looking for it, the tailstock mod starts on page 9 of the thread. (One of the best mods I've done to my GH1330)

I am going to sort through several thousand emails as I have been to ill to do this. Must be over 10,000 of them over 3 weeks. Then tidy up the writing room and remove anything that does not belong in there. No, it is not untidy just full of stuff I don't refer to much now. Then I will tackle Windows 10 privacy settings and start a new backup device for 2016.

Well from being the most popular thread of 2015 this seems to be languishing a bit this year!

On reflection maybe that should not be too surprising - anyone who saw the New Year in with style may need to be a little quiet today!

David that sounds like a determined work schedule - but don't overstretch yourself - getting well is the most important thing. I hope that happens soon for you.

Anyway a Happy New Year to all - I look forward to more entertainment with your posts in 2016. Who knows I may even do something significant enough to post on the other "action" thread - if I can make progress on something!

I could,t find any wizards for cutting an internal taper in Path Pilot so I Hijacked the Parallel boring Wizard, did a load of trigonometry completely modified the G-code and came up with a taper turning programme for a 10 degree taper on a magneto timing sprocket.

When I had finished writing the G-code at the machine and I tried to run it the Path Pilot Screen told me that I would exceed the Z axis by 490 inches. This was easy to spot on the tool path screen as a great long line heading off the screen and out of the workshop door and down the garden path.

I tried a couple of times to see if I had missed out a decimal point somewhere but couldn't spot it, however by accident I discovered a nice feature of Path Pilot, by clicking on the tool path line that extended off the screen the relevant line in the programme is highlighted. This showed my hunch about a missing decimal point was correct and I changed the line to suit.

I removed the boring bar from the tool holder and ran it without the cutting tool in the machine and all looks good, I will try it out and see if my trigonometry has worked once my camera battery has charged up and I will post some video later.

Last month I spent an hour looking for my fishtail gauge only to find it where it was supposed to be all along.
In failing to find something today I came across a tin of endmills I must have bought at the club shop so long ago I forget but at the bottom found no fewer than 3 gauges, all Whitworth.

car boot today was a bit damp but got a nice pair of clippers I didn't,t. Need Trying to get to grips with this I pad thingy! Finally gave in and got one, seems ok.

Anyone got any experience with epoxy floor paint? i used poly 15 years ago and it needs touching up. Thought the epoxy version might be better and a friend wants some so we can bulk buy if it,s any cop?

Epoxy might not stick to the poly, or react with it. You might need to get advice from manufacturer.

While looking for something else I came across the middle (page 36) of this blog by an interesting Model Engineer. Only looked at a few pages but he seems to have been going for 12 years so a lot to look at. It is on a community forum but he uses it as a blog.

I wonder if Stanley is a member here. The bit I read was part of an ornamental lathe restoration.

My mains 'Trip' saga continues. The Nephew has taken part of the circuit and put it through another switch type B? . Anyway that means when it trips it is only the kitchen part of the circuit that includes the fridge and the fridge/freezer. It is entirely random and has no indication of being caused by switching etc.It may happen once or maybe 3 times a day. Nothing so far today and it's raining so any thing damp would have happened by now. I have now found that they are all on 2 pole switches/sockets. This now leaves the central heating and a boiler tank c/unit in circuit. I cannot test any of that and wifey has now contacted someone who specializes in this dilemma @ £50/60 per hour. Needs must, so we will have to bring them in and they can have a look. I found a place to hire a PAT instrument at £46 a day. A bit much I thought until I realized it was a postal job so insurance was the cost.

This will not happen till Wed. coming, so more later.

Been trying to find that site for some time. Used to be regular reading until their resident IT man changed the layout. Stanley's saga with the pair of engines was quite fascinating and his enthusiasm for his friend Johnny's (?) fettling and modelling skills was well founded. The daily activity thread was interesting also - some nostalgic recipes in there!!

News24 and papers are on abut kids needing to know their times tables by 11yrs old shock horror. Surely we all knew them by 8, and with shillings and pence thrown in. Almost every day I still make calculations based on that recitation at primary school.

We were talking just today about multiplication and division of pounds shillings, and pence when we were at school, someone mentioned that with the introduction of decimal currency, it saved about two years of maths education. Personally addition, and subtraction was bad enough. I remember that mum could do all the calculation faster than any check out girl could operate a cash register, she used to reckon that calculators were a waste of time.

My trip saga, I notice that two of the wall switches have neon indicators, both are not working and I wonder if the fact that the neon indicator being off has any significance with the trip going off? I can obviously replace them and will do so as soon as I can find them, Maybe B & Q which I will visit today. The two switches are feeding the washing machine and the small fridge alongside it and are both in the circuit that is tripping.

Ian, my Dad was like that, delighted in telling the check-out girl how much his shopping came to before she could hit the 'total' key, then tell her how much change he was due. The look of total surprise on the girls face, like how could someone do that without a calculator, was brilliant. Happy Days!

Actually no. We had a chart on the wall at primary school with coloured stars representing recital of the 2 to 12 times tables. Muggins was last; stuck on the 2 times table, and was written off by the teachers. On the other hand I did end up getting a 1st class honours degree in engineering and did a PhD and several years post-doc research. So while it is important to know the basics one needs to be careful when making decisions based on arbitrary standards. I don't subscribe to the 'teacher knows the child best' mantra; I was just glad to leave school and start learning.

Clive... Re. Neons. These usually go black inside depositing electrode material over their life of many years. I've never come across neon causing tripping when there connected live and neutral. If they were connected live and earth with and RCD feeding them and there were consuming the same as the trip current, then they would trip the RCD.

I could 'do the calcs with the voltage drop of approx 70 Volts but that probably going to nerdy!

Just an aside - is there an electric kettle on that circuit with the washing mac. And fridge? Again, I have experience with tripping due to an old kettle element.

Teaching children - When I was at school everybody learnt by repeating stuff, tables , spelling, etc. The commonest question was " what use is this to me ?" I think this is the teachers and parents job, explaining what use and interest the subject has. As an example " what use is knowing about triangles going to be ?" Mention 3,4 ,5 triangle will be useful if you are going to build a shed.
