Sorry, but I'm not gonna make it this time. One of the grandkids has been in hospital with a severe cough and breathing issues on a Covid scare - mercifully it's negative and he's recovered enough to be released, but Carol and I have been looking after the other siblings all day and we're on the floor now...

surprise

About 24 attended.

The meeting started with introductions from everyone in turn typically mentioning their workshop size or equipment or where they were based, work or retirement status, or somethign like that. Then we did a bit of show and tell including a nearly finished Dividing Head, a 3D printed loco wheel test piece and a functioning armored car back axle with rubber tyres, a guess the lathe spindle, a V8, and some library books shelves for the intellectual ones.

I noted the following attending:
Neil (without hat), Roger, Emgee, Keith, Malc, Oldiron, Nick, Bob, George, David, Tubal, John A, Colin from Edinburgh, Pete,, Stewart, Steve, Simon in south of France, Bill W, Jimmy B, Derek, Maurice, Frances IOM, John B.
So people coming in from France and Edinburgh. Maybe next month we can get someone from the USA as it would be between 11am and 2pm and Oz as it will be 7am in Melbourne after our clocks change I think.

If you are stuck inside and want to try another zoom meeting with engineers you are welcome to join the EDMES Friday cofee morning at 10am, every week. PM me and I will send you details.

WOW!

Thanks everyone, that went much more smoothly than I expected.

It was great to see so many of you.

Apologies to Frances - we could see you, but it seemed that when you unmuted we lost your video and did not get sound

I did get the offer of a second, free unlimited meeting. As four week's time would be my birthday, I went for three week's time, 10 November, at the same time 19:00 GMT (the clocks will have been set back so no problems!)

Please offer some suggestions for any topics we could discuss.

If anyone would like to make a short (5-minute) presentation on any relevant topic, please offer your suggestions.

Thanks again,

Neil

Hi Guys,

Interesting being able to see people that you only normally chat to via this forum.

Thanks Neil.

Hi All

Yes, good to put faces to names and hear of others interests.

On checking back in my records I have a confession to make regarding when I started the V8 engine build, it was 2001, not 1990 as that was when I started the 5 cylinder Radian, even so it is a long time in the works for what seems like a few parts.

Neil, a real piece of added value there.

I dont know how everyone else is enduring the pandemic. We seem to be able to go around our daily business etc, but it is getting very boring! What I miss, are routine exchanges outwith our small circles. And, while maybe not a perfect substitute for 'pub night', this helps to create some remedy.

It was also genuinely nice to attach some identity to profile names, matching them to talking beards.

Cheers, Colin

Neil - was having significant problems in that I lost the connection about every 5 minutes - used a machine separate from my usual machines that worked fine for a private zoom meeting a few weeks ago but it was a fairly up to date (updated about a month ago) Firefox on Mint 19.3 - because it is not my usual machine I had set no restrictions so running the standard Firefox - I set it up about 6pm to check out but even then after about 5mins I got the postapp zoom page so for some reason even without the meeting starting it was switching out - possibly the machine was too old - a Lenovo X300i with an intel i3 which seems fairly potent for other tasks and there were no other heavy tasks running on my LAN - the video + audio was fine when connected

Great to be able to put faces to names.

Well done Neil, for setting this up.

I will make sure I dont end up baby sitting 3 grandchildren under 6 next time and take a more active part at the next meeting!

Regards to all

Derek

Although I started with doubts and intended just to listern I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting. I thought it was a great success and look forward to the next one.

Having an advertised topic may be an idea but it must not be too specialised for fear of a small attendence: Perhaps, from Hillclimber's posting, "Keeping the workshop active in times of difficulty".

Neil, many thanks for organising an excellent meeting.

Thaks for the zoom meeting. I got shown by my eMail which is tubal as the Lab issued me with a licenced account so I didn't get to specify a more freindly user name. Ithought it worked well for a first meeting. Definitely needs some structure as we go on. My suggestions would be Intro's of new members, mystery objects, show and tell and as Neil suggested a short presentation. some of this to be planned in advance and some spontaneous. Definitely has potential. Sort of instant virtual Model Engineering Club.

best regards Martin

Incidentally, I am a fan of Tom Walshaw but Tubal Cain was a biblical metal worker which is I'm sure where he got the tag from. I just used it as a way of anonymising my eMail address in a way they was meaningfull. He also had a brother Jubal as in Jubilation who was a musician.

His lesser known cousin was a snooker player, Cubal.
