Thanks Ketan,

John helped me out a lot when I started this job. It was about six months before I realised he was the same bloke who had done me a couple of favours a year or two earlier!

I hope John knows how much I appreciate his help, but I want to record here just how grateful I am to him.

As a dedicated tea drinker I even forgive him for making me drink workshop coffee made with powdered milk out of a mug that looked like he'd been keeping rusty nails in it...

Keep smiling, Sir John of Blidgeport.

Neil

OI! That's how I drink my coffee...

Infection - clumsy bastard...

John, get well soon,

regards,

Mike.

Hi John - sounds as if you're having a pretty rough time of it. We're all rooting for you, mate.

Best wishes to you and Debs.

Best wishes John, hurry back, I need some advice on an Aran ribbed jumper?
I'm using number 6 needles and the pattern says to increase every fourth row by one stitch, but this makes the straight ribbing a little crooked. Any thoughts?

Get well soon John, we miss you!

Only had the pleasure of meeting him once, when I collected a whole load of ME back issues, BUT that was enough to realise just what a diamond he is!

Geoff - Vasbyte John!

Can only wish you well, in all senses of the word, John.

Keep at it!

Illegitimos non carborundum!

Will count the days until you are again dispensing common sense and skill on here.

I asked him a while ago to modify this pulley I had, but that's when I found out about the illness.

A while before all that, I sent him some milling cutters to sharpen and I forgot to tape them together, So he soon let me know he just received this packet shot to pieces from the snail mail.

I'd been harping on about how hard it is to find workshops who'll resharpen them, it seems a shame to throw them away when it's only the end bit that's gone chipped or blunt. So I think he took pity on me. laugh

Anyway, the finish on them when I got them back is astoundingly clean and shiny, I'm sure they never looked that good new.

So I'm praying things will get better for John, we can't do without him on here and the amount of people he's lent a hand to goes untold.

I'll stop there before I get too schmaltzy.

Thanks John for passing on so much of your knowledge. Used your 'recipe' for HTD5 pulleys just the other day...

John ...who is going to control the Chinese machine tool industry's advance ? You need to develop your successor in both technical and linguistic skills! Besides, the legions of clumsy bastards still need to be sorted.

I have followed John's posts on a variety of technical forums over the years. I respected his practical solutions, enjoyed his apprenticeship memoirs and our one face-to-face meeting.

What the bloody heck is this news? Just about the time I learn His language this happens. He has caused Me to do more research on the English language than I ever thought possible, seeing I already know American English. Get well and don't eye the nurses in front of Deb or She might lose Your Meds.

I first met John 15+ years ago when I bought a precision level from him. And again shortly afterwards when I bought a universal dividing head; which has featured on these pages every now and again. Both were advertised on the late lamented Chris Heapy website. I paid a third visit to the old house and workshop to pick up some extra change gears for the dividing head, on my way to a Myford open day. And what a disappointment that was. No factory tour, tea in a plastic cup and some over-priced machines, based on the fact they'd belonged to a well-known model engineer; whose name I'm afraid I can't remember. I learnt more about my Myford cylindrical grinder from some-one in the queue for the stores counter than I ever did from the factory.

Since then we exchanged sporadic notes on the forum, and by email, on assorted topics, mainly gears, Gearotic (which I never did get working) and Mach3.

Dunno whether he ever learnt anything from me. Probably not, except, possibly, that not all people with a Ph.D. are impractical numpties. On t'other hand I've learnt a hell of a lot from him, including how to bodge it when a solution is needed fast. thumbs up

Get well soon John, don’t let Ketan get away with the pound he owes you.

You are a true gentleman, knew that the first time we met you, dig in!!!
