Thread: Quick change tool post and ball cutting |

I am happy with my Arc bought quick change tool post. First thing I bought after the Seig lathe. I previously used one on my Myford 254. Tool heights will alter when the tool is reground if not using inserts, needing reshiming. Ian Edited By Ian Hewson on 24/07/2023 11:00:49 |

Thread: Broaching |

A quick update, I purchased a no1 press, the clearance is 140mm from the top of the ram to the base with the punch plate removed, so it has enough clearance. It was a cheap press on offer vat free, so I didn’t expect much and have spent a couple of afternoons squaring up the ram etc. Should be set for winter, got all the bar stock and flywheels before prices rise. Thanks for the replies, appreciated. Ian |

Thanks for that, looks like the no1 will just do for what I want, collecting the pieces for a Farmboy to keep me occupied over the winter.much appreciated. Ian |

Hi ndny Shims are added after the first cut according to Arc. Ian

Thanks Jason, that is what I suspected, didn’t know how deep the broach went into the hole before cutting started. Ian |

Hi I have not bought a press yet, which is why I am asking the question. Arc’s broach is 128 long, and the flywheel is 180 dia x 20mm thick. I used to slot with the lathe, but find a 3mm slot in a10mm hole is a bit fragile, so want to try broaching. Ian |

Hi am anyone tell me if a 3 mm broach 128mm long will fit in a no1 arbor press with a 25mm flywheel please? Ian |

Fitted a 100 tooth hostaform gear to the lead crew on my Seig sc3 mini lathe. Arrive this morning and fitted in less then an hour. Just needed a key way cutting and the boss removing, bore luckily was spot on, bought from the Bearing Shop with only the tooth count and module known. Don’t know why they are not shown as spares in the UK, as they seem readily available in the states. Rear cover fitted without any mods although some say they had to mod their cover when the fitted the gear. Auto feed is now much better. Edited By Ian Hewson on 02/05/2023 17:34:48 |

Hi Tug I was in the same frame of mind three years ago when we moved house, sold all my machines and kept a few hand tools , mics etc. After we had settled I realised that I had not lost interest and have bought a mini lathe and mill to fit the smaller area I now have. It was a mistake to sell all my equipment as I am now having to buy new tools. If you have the space I would suggest you keep the machines for some time as you may regret selling them. Best wishes whatever you decide. Ian |
Thread: Oil Blacking |

I used to save my old engine oil for my father to take to work at Singers sewing machines for oil blacking sewing machine parts they made. He was a tool room fitter at Kershaws in Leeds and worked on cameras for them, then marking out Centurion tank turrets at Rof Barnbow before sewing machines. Never encouraged me with metalworking, I was an electrician, but I guess it’s in the genes. |

Could it be an age problem? I am 78 and have non of the problems mentioned. The privacy glass I find is very useful for it’s primary function ie privacy of the rear seats and their contents. Perhaps it could be an eyesight problem seeing through it? Or are we confusing privacy glass with the illegal darkened windows beloved by boy and girl racers. |
