MyTimeMedia are pleased to announce that MEW has a new Editor from 1st March.
Neil Wyatt will take up the reins officially on 1st March, taking over from David Clark who has been Editor for seven years.
Neil, a practising model engineer, has a particular interest in stationary engines and making workshop tooling. He has written for both ME and MEW over the last few years, his most recent series being the construction of a model stationary engine, ‘Norden’ in ME. He intends to continue writing as and when time permits. He is known to many on this forum as Stub Mandrel and - from a moderator’s point of view - as the calm ‘voice of reason’.

Neil is full of enthusiasm for the role of Editor and has lots of fresh ideas. He has been in contact with a number of this magazine’s established writers in recent weeks and is currently preparing Issue 215 but he would be very pleased to hear from any writers who have submitted articles that have not yet been published or from anyone who has, at any time, considered writing for MEW but has not yet submitted an article.
Everyone at MyTimeMedia wishes Neil well and looks forward to a bright new era for the magazine.

Neil

Congratulations (I think!)

I do hope it all goes well for you. I concur with Diane's " calm voice of reason" comment - let's hope that you are able to maintain your equilibrium amongst the "slings and arrows" of outrageous posters!

Kind Regards

Norman

PS The edit was because I typed " CLAM voice rather than CALM voice - but, on reflection, maybe CLAM is appropriate!

Hi Neil, congraulations, and I hope you get positive support from everyone.

May (dare) I ask why the sudden change change in editor, as there hasn't been any hint that David was quitting, no disrespects to either party.

Regards Nick.

Best of luck in your new post Neil, at least I won't have to worry about letting the cat out of the bag now that its public.

Should also add a thankyou to DC1 and I hope this will give you a bit more time in your own workshop

Neil, congratulations. I very much enjoyed reading the Norden series in ME as well as your thoughtful postings in this forum.

And of course we all need to offer an enormous thank you to DC who for many years had the difficult task of keeping both magazines afloat.

Regards,

Clive

Hello to all members of the Forum,

I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to edit a publication with the status of Model Engineers’ Workshop. I’d like to start by thanking David Clark for all he has done for MEW, and for helping me to get off to a good start.

As Diane has said, many of you will already be familiar with my postings as Stub Mandrel on this forum. I suppose I’ll have to be a little less irreverent now.

MEW has a few decades or more to go to equal the track record of its illustrious companion, Model Engineer. Nonetheless, the first issue was in 1990 so next year will mark a quarter century of MEW. My predecessors, Stan Bray, Harold Hall, Geoff Sheppard, David Fenner and David Clark have all proven to be talented writers and engineers. I hope I can live up to the standards they have set. While I am not an engineer by training (I’m an ecologist and environmentalist), I am an enthusiastic model engineer, and I have, on and off, been involved with editing a variety of publications over the last thirty years.

Like the previous editors, I hope I will be able to stamp my own character on MEW without fundamentally changing what the magazine is about. There’s no doubt it has evolved considerably since the first issue - Stan Bray’s original vision was an occasional special, rather than a regular monthly magazine.

Those first issues were more or less quarterly, so serials were problematic, and many of the articles in issue one were very straightforward examples workshop tooling. One stand out article in issue one comprises two pages on ‘engineering of the future’ – it’s in the archive at www.model-engineer.co.uk/members/digitaleditions.

My aim will be to give all readers, both regular subscribers and those who just pick up the occasional copy, an engaging, informative and entertaining read. I look forward to hearing from readers and subscribers in my new role. I’ll probably start a few discussions going on this forum, but if anyone wants to contact me on a specific (including suggestions and offers of future articles) I’m happy to be contacted by email at [email protected].

I started with a thank you, I’ll finish some. Thanks to Diane and everyone at MyTimeMedia who has helped me climb the start of a really steep learning curve. Thanks to Mike Chrisp for publishing my first articles in ME – which gave me a great boost, and encouraged me to try more challenging projects and write about them. I hope I can encourage some beginners in the same way. Finally, thank you to all of MEW’s readers and contributors over the years. It’s your interest and contributions that really make the magazine and I look forward to getting to know many of you over my tenure as editor.

Neil

P.S. I hadn't the faintest idea this might happen when I posted the link Michael refers to. It looks like I've given you all plenty of rope to hang me by if I get it wrong!

I was genuinely considering if I should continue with my subscription to MEW but now I feel I must carry on as I think it would be bad timing to cancel it just as a new editor is appointed. So no pressure Neil!

From what I have read, both in the magazine and on the forum recently I think it is time for a new editor (sorry but it has to be said) but even so, I for one recognise that if DC had not been in post, the magazine(s) would probably have been history some time ago.

So DC - Thank you and whatever your reasons for standing down you have some good achievements to look back on.

Neil - Thank you for taking over and look forward to a magazine with your stamp on it.

Regards to you both

John

I have deleted my text on this post as it was in response to a question from DC but on posting it  I noticed the question had been removed.

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes.

You'll see that this is my first post in my own name.

I'm not sure whether poor old Stub Mandrel has a future. He may well post about day to day workshop activities and even write the odd article for MEW or ME, while I reserve this account for my 'official' postings, but Stub won't be hiding his true identity.

Good luck Neil, I look forward to the fresh approach that you undoubtedly will bring. If you do as good a job as Diane has achieved with ME then both mags will have a secure future!

Good luck too to David. Hopefully you will now have more time to get your own workshop up and running and produce some construction articles of your own to share with us!

Kind regards to you both, Martin.
