Diminishing chocolate bar

Just had my delivery note email.

I used to have 250g bars then reduced to 230g bar then 200g bar.

Now they are sending 180g bar. Wat is happening to this world wen you can't buy a decent large bar of chocolate and the nut size in the bar is reduced as well.

One favourite luxury I buy from the big 'M' (supermarket) are the Lindt Lindor offerings. I carefully watch the prices of this BUT beware. On 'offer' at times, 3 of the smaller boxes for £10, at the moment about £5 each or the larger box on offer at £7.50. Which is the best value? Wonder how many look at the Yellow 'Price per 100gm" label on the face of the rack containing them? Same with St Agur cheese, another of my luxuries, normal price £2.40, offer same for £1.80 - 4 packs quickly in trolly..

Seen a few weeks ago, 500gm box of Lurpac butter £3, 1kg box (Twice the weight for those incapable of 2 x table) for £7.50? DOH.

I see this A LOT since I took over shopping duties some years back. The larger "economy" packs are more money per gram etc than the smaller ones. So it's more economical to buy two smaller packs than one large one. Happen s on everything from chocolates to laundry detergent and everything in between. I think they rely on most people not looking at the price per 100gm sticker and simply assuming that the bigger packs are cheaper, which always used to be the case, in the days when there was some vestige of honesty left in business. Caveat emptor.

After Eights are still as good as they used to be, Quality Street too, just look out for when they are on special

Cadbury stuff is a writeoff now, US based companies never could do chocolate although Mars isn't bad

Bigger box of Lindors was/is (When they do it) cheaper than 3 off.

Shrinkflation is the word, says it all.

Agree Cadbury choc is now aweful, formulation changed to USA style. (they could never make decent chocolate over there). Too much Palm Oil I guess.

Sainsburys were out of stock of 4pt milk and had no substitute available, it seems hard to believe.

Not only do the chocolates reduce in size in the shop; the problem becomes even worse once they are at home and are unwrapped!

I'm in America and I don't know why anyone would buy a Hershey chocolate bar...They're disgusting.

Likely a shorter list of items which are still the same size!

I immediately thought of milky ways, polos, mars bars. I expect there are a multitude of others.

I have been buying maltesers for my wife, recently. I looked at refilling the display box with some from a plain(er) plastic bag - but the ones in the display box were better value.

The better (apparent) value of the reduced size bar could easily be accounted for by the smaller nuts required - and possibly a good run on using up time-dated stocks of chocolate - among other factors, such as standard packaging sizes.

Once upon a time a Mars bar was big enough to cut into slices and share, but now...

Ah!! memories. And sometimes you got one of the ends - had more chocolate.

Think Marianne Faithful and Mick Jagger inspired fun-size ones.

I buy Oetker's extra-dark baking chocolate - you can get it in the home-baking aisle of most supermarkets.

It's about the same price as Cadbury's kiddie stuff, 74% cocao solids and only 29% sugar, so you can get a hard theobromine hit with low(-ish) sugar intake.

Wot's not to like?

Easy, for a long time UK inflation was low (less than 1.0% for most of 2020), but it's been rising since January last year, 4.9% this January and the Bank of England are predicting it will rise above 7% this spring. Probably best to Google for explanations, but the pound in your pocket isn't worth what it was. As a result we're all getting less for our money. Chocolate, food, gas, electric, petrol, taxes, and pretty much everything else.

Just before chocolate bars become stupidly tiny manufacturers will reset our expectations by switching back to giant bars. They'll cost much more, but the new super-sizes will quell most criticism.

The cloud has a slightly silvery lining. If it's any consolation, low interest rates are good for pensioners but bad for the economy in general. The optimum inflation rate is about 2% because it encourages mild spending. Inflation above 5% is too high to be healthy, let's hope it comes down soon.

I'm not a great chocolate eater, although I do use plain chocolate when baking (not bakers chocolate). One can still buy 100g bar for 30p with 50% cocoa solids. A couple of those melted in the microwave and poured over a few hazelnuts??
The time to worry is when we use US gallons to keep the price down and a KWH becomes smaller
