Thread: boring 20 mm diameter hole in aluminium
27/09/2023 07:40:56

Drill through with a drill the same size as the pilot drill in the hole saw firstly. remove the drill from the holesaw and replace it with a plain piece of bar. Next drill halfway through, making sure it is clamped or held in a vice. Use paraffin as a cutting lubricant. turn over and drill from other side. This should work.

Thread: electrical fault puzzle
19/09/2023 12:46:38

hI If the celing lamps are flurecent then that would be where i would start to look. If one of the chokes has a short to earth the fault could be neuteral to earth. I would disconect each row and check them one at a time till you find the row then check the fittings on that row.

Andy what is wrong with original spinde. Is it beyond repair or is it just the fit between the bearings and the spindle or is this a modification to original.

Thread: moving a 1250kg bridgeport clone
17/09/2023 08:42:41

Moving a J&S Bridgport is staight forward if you use the handbook information but not knowing the clone information this may not help but here is the correct way to move it.

wind down the table as low as it will go wind it back and center left and right. Next rotate the head till it is upside down so all weight is down as low as possible and lock all clamps and tighten bolts. There is a threaded hole in the top of the top of the slide which supports the head 3/4 UNC which an eye bolt screws into for lifting the whole machine. Hire a gantry from a hire station and simply lift the whole machine bolt substantial wooden frame to the bottom of the casting for stability through the bolt down holes lower on to the trailer and strap down with substatial straps. Dismantle the gantry and take it with you to reverse the lift. Look at your mill for holes as there may be bar holes for lifting or other eye bolt hols etc.

Thread: 12 x 2 lead screw
09/09/2023 07:46:57

Just a thought. Have you checked the length of any scale on the DRO if you have one fitted as twice i have had to sort out this problem when other people slide the bed beyond the scale limits and scraped the reader head.

On most machinery of this age there is play in the holes in the mounting plate where it bolts to the casting so you wind the screw in so it is near to the front which supports the nut to leadscrew and then tighten the plate bolts which eliminates the sag in the play of the set up.

Sand with fine emery paper and or scotch brite then polish with Solvol Autosol polish, somtimes use buffing wheel, then clean with a quick drying solvent cleaner and finnish with Renassance wax. if it is going to get hot in use just go to solvol Autosol.

i wondered where all the machinery i worked went to. We had Webster bennett horizontal lathes and large planners and shapers mainly used on mining machinery for Dossco and large pipe plastic moulds for gas pipe fittings.

Thread: Beginners First Mill
22/08/2023 22:32:58

I have the 16VS mill and it does most things i need but i found the Z axis handwheel at the back of the colum a bit of a nuisance with me being a bit short of stature, and had to do a mod to change the handwheel with bevel gears to the right hand side. I would sugest the 20VS which is slightly bigger.

I would have a look around at as many mills as possible as depending what you want to machine can be limited by the height of the machine and drills for instance get longer with biger diamiter and how you hold what you hold material with also impinges as well. depending where you live there may be a club or society where you can actualy look at diferent machines and perhaps visit arcerotrade Leicester or Chester machine tools or any other supplier.

Thread: Improve 3-jaw chuck repeatability
12/08/2023 08:34:55

I have a Pratt Burnard chuck which if i take care repeats to less than a thou. I use the key hole marked with the O all the time and check it with a few diferant sized hardened and ground dowels from 8mm dia to 13mm and 25mm to ensure it runns true especialy if i have had a problem of tool jam etc. the chuck is screwed to the back plate with 6 cap screws three from the front into the back plate and three through the back plate into the chuck. there is clearance on the location between the chuck and back plate so with the screws slightly loose I can put a dowel into the chuck and tighten the chuck with the O key hole, then tap the chuck till i get a zero reading. Nip up the screws and check runnout again and if ok fully tighten all screws. this set up works for me and i get consistant good holding and location on all jobs as long as they are round etc.

Thread: Cutting a 1 1/8 fine pitch thread into PTFE!
12/08/2023 08:13:12

If you use an insert thread tool you can get a full form shaped insert which will form the crest of the thread as well as the root of the thread as long as you use the correct insert for the thread that you choose. this will trim any miss formed thread when you come to the corect depth of thread you are cutting. Have a look at APT tool web site.

have a look at cutting a thread on my lathe recently although it is in bronze but 8 TPI https://youtu.be/7IgjID3RHkQ drop me a message if you want any further info.

Thread: Warco WM250V - Cross Slide Screw Replacement
27/07/2023 07:06:50

Hi John. It may be possible that there is some play in the holes which bolt the plate to the front of the slide which allows you to align the leadscrew with the nut as you assemble. Loosely screw in the leadscrew with screws loose in the plate that bolts it to the slide and the same for the nut. Then screw the leadscrew all the way in till almost as far as if will go then tighten the bolts and the screw should be in alignment and tighten the screw holding the nut as well.

Thread: Hit & Miss Engine - Help Needed
27/07/2023 06:22:02

Hi the wireing for a proximity switch is usually brown positive blue negative and black signal. To get an output you need to use the power and signal wires not the negative wire on a microswitch. Have you a wireing diagram for the coil item or some details of model and maker to search with. Try red and white wires on the microswitch
