In the past few days I've been logged off this site about 5 times. Why?

Usually, my logon lasts for weeks, but this morning I not only had to logon again, but a couple of hours later I wanted to post something. After composing the post I was told I had to login again. I logged in and found my post had been deleted and had to re-compose it. Grrh.

I think if you access the site from more than one device it only lets one work at a time. If you used a phone or tablet that might be trying to connect you in the background.
If you need to re-login half way through try using right click and open in another tab for the login action. It does let you run multiple sessions on the same computer.

Additional to Bazyle's reply: You are also at the mercy of 'contention'

Gary,

Only 5 times in the last few days? You are a lucky fellow. Probably ten times each day is more like I get!

Gary, perhaps your internet settings are clearing the cache and other links and history after each web visit, that may be worth checking.

Yes, same here!

It only ever happens on this site as well.

I'm using only one device and this started to happen only a week or so ago.I'll treat it as an annoyance.then.

I am having the same problem, I only access forums from an iPad, tick the remember me box when I log in and this site logs me out about six times a day, another forum I follow I think I have been logged in since Christmas.

Just to add to the reasons for getting unceremoniously logged out - since I've never seen it mentioned:

I have a bar of bookmarks on my toobar in FF, one of which is an ME folder which opens to five links to various ME site pages. Sometimes, instead of left clicking on the folder, I unthinkingly centre-click ... which of course opens all five links in separate tabs.

This will unfailingly get me logged off !

I think an earlier thread came up with at least five ways our system can decide to log you out.

In short, it's a bit of a lottery but there are a few things to avoid like multiple computers, deleting cookies or ISPs who frequently change your computer's IP address at random.

Must be a FF thing as I usually have a couple or more ME tabs open at the same time. Often udd photos to an album in one while posting on another and don't get logged off.

Not a firefox issue.

Well a couple or more isn't five of course but to check, I went through the list and opened them one by one .... and didn't get logged off. Similarly, when I browse the "Latest Posts" lists I typically middle-click on the ones of interest to open them in separate tabs and then go through and read them. I often have 5 to 10 tabs open without a problem.

I can only assume that, when I do what I referred to in my previous post, the rapid repeat-rate of the consecutive requests is a problem (I have a fast internet connection).

Logins are stored on your computer with cookies, if the cookie gets deleted somehow then your log in is lost.

Using Firefox myself i have all my logins stored in 'manage permissions' this keeps just those cookies and all other ones get deleted every time I close Firefox.

The amount of cookies from just one hour browsing can be considerable and many of these will be following your browsing habits and generally tracking you.

The security advice from many sources is to log out from websites when leaving them, advice I try to make a habit of following.

I have to log in pretty much every time I open my iPhone despite always leaving the page open in safari, and the remember me box just doesn’t. It’s annoying because other forums will stay logged in indefinitely on the same phone.

I have noticed that the little box with "stay logged in" or something like that, occurs at random. I try to stay logged in by minimising the active page and opening a new page, it works most of the time. When I have finished with the computer, it gets fully closed down and the power switched off, so I am used to logging on to all forums and the like.

Not being knowledgable on computers, I thought having to keep logging in was acceptable procedure, and I use firefox.
