Hi

Going back to page 9 of this thread John Steveson describes a tailstock conversion.

I am interested in doing this but I'm confused by the first picture.

It shows the replacement block that fits on the end of the tailstock and I can see the brass clamp that locks the barrel BUT it appears to go right through the bottom fixing holes.

Could someone please shed some light on this.

thanks

Roy.

The Bees, a week ago I had a swarm, and today I had 2 in the same bush. The bees were easy but the bush, a Holly bush left its mark on me from the prickly leaves. I suppose better that the Blackberry shrubs they usually swarm to. Both swarms now housed in their Nucleus boxes and seem happy. The main hives i have added empty honey boxes and they are filling nicely from fruit tree blossom.

Hi Roy,

I have done this conversion and it is described here:

This may help you.

Hi Roy

I think that it goes through the counterbores so the screws will be infront of it.

I am making the same for my minilathe. I am going to try the Bogstandard2 method which is to screw into the key.

Cheers Michael

Michael, It was I who used the key to lock the dummy barrel, see pics below:

And I can confirm, after much use, the locking method works very well, no regrets going down this route. This has to be one of the best mods I've done to this lathe (Spindle drive clutch next followed by screwcutting clutch)

Definitely an improvement on the barrel lock I fitted, less parts and easier to make.

Sorry about the misdirection Graeme. I remember reading what you wrote but could I find it afterwards!

Cheers Michael.

Damn. I took out our airing cupboard when we did the new bathroom (condensing boiler, not hot tank).

Must get a bar of 19mm steel for the tailstock mod.

Hi Neil,

For a Seig minilathe you need 22 mm bar. Also note that M -Machine stock 22 x 3 mm steel tube which would save a lot of drilling.

G'day.

Rescued 12,000+ emails from a friend's 5 business Windoze XP PC's after he migrated to newer machines with Windoze 7 and Office 2013. (Outlook 2013). Mickeysoft do not have a tool to do this.

In case anybody is 'upgrading' their old kit, I documented how to rescue all your old stuff, P.M. me for details.

Thanks Mike,

Saved me some bovver!

I found my old 'inversion' mountain bike forks today, with a distinct bend and bulge below the crown (ouch!)

They have long tubes, over 1 inch diameter sliding inside outer tubes, unlike most forks its just alloy tube in alloy tube and the fit is amazing, a gentle push fit all the way and no shake. Even allowing for grease, it must have been the most expensive part of the manufacture.

Danny, I may be doing this soon, although I use Thunderbird so it should just be a case of copying the user profile folder over. If I get stuck I'll shout, but I won't be without a machine at any point*.

Neil

*not now I know the problem with the old one was a bank of defective memory.

Well so far I have had breakfast. But this is on the cards this week. One of those "not a Rush Job" which now suddenly has become one so I will have to sort some bits out and get cracking. Does anyone know what it is? There is a prize for the first person who guesses:

Some sort of bell, does it go at the top of one of those fairground sideshows where you hit something with a big hammer?

You are on the right track, it rings a Bell. The hammer and fairground bit don't apply.

graham.

(And that's your only guess as the prize is a selection of brand new Dormer bits)

Is it one of those bells that were on buses years ago? Pull the cord and it alerted the driver to stop.

I think it was the prison door lock, and Mr. lumpa used his secret screwdriver to take it off and escape.

I just painted 360 ft of scaffold planks with a home made preservative...used engine oil and petrol mix...not planning on using them to stand on!
