She tried 3 shops all sold out ! Looked on the Bay loads of over price items there. Typical of rip off Britain. Suppose it's more hot toddies on a night. |

They used to do big bottles of two hundred until people started to overdose on them. Hot whiskey and lemon is of course an essential part of the treatment. Makes colds fun. |

It contains more ascorbic acid (vitamin C) than citric acid. I always by the generic (Tesco as they are loca t me. Other brands avilablel) version. https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/2763/smpc#gref Robert G8RPI |

David When I last had a cold, my local pharmacist refused to sell me Contact 400 since I am on medication to lower blood pressure. I find a hot drink with HONEY helps with coughing. MC |

... SHMBO said she would get some Lemsip when she went out. She tried 3 shops all sold out ! ... Not just Lemsip, there are many odd shortages in the shops at the moment. No tinned tomatoes, mince, Lasagne Sauce, Coffeemate or Nougat in my big local Tesco last week. Almost out of filtered milk, and the cereal section was empty, though I didn't need any. Several reasons. Leaving the EU, high energy prices slowing down businesses, global supply difficulties, ongoing recovery from COVID and its reappearance, value of the pound sagging, reduced confidence in the UK economy, labour shortages, high sickness rate including a nasty-ish flu, war in Europe, threat to Taiwan, and more. Faced with a temporary shortage I switch to alternatives. Another cold-cure, or make my own from plain paracetamol, lemon juice, and maybe a generic decongestant. Just don'[t overdose, and make sure the mix isn't contra-indicated with any prescription drugs. Dave |

The human body is pretty good at fighting the common cold, but it needs the raw materials to do so; to make extra white blood cells and other things to destroy the viruses. Do any of us eat a truly balanced diet, and therefore have all the trace elements and minerals in our bodies? Probably not. I like to ensure my body has everything it needs to fight infections. I get occasional sniffles and sneezes, but I cannot remember the last time I had an actual cold or flu, and I have never taken a flu jab. Edited By John Doe 2 on 05/01/2023 12:59:49 |

Agreed, even if you do eat enough of the required foodstuffs for a “balanced” diet (whatever that is) you may not adequately absorb all the nutrients from it. I read some time ago that the older you get the harder it is to absorb some nutrients. Then of course there are medications and other things we consume that don’t help in this respect either. I have a regular prescription for vitamin D as the doctor noted I was low after a blood test some years ago. According to some sources it’s vital and many if not most people have low levels during the winter here in the UK. |
