Thread: Myford Super 7 mods
02/09/2023 17:44:46

Hi All

My brother has a Super 7 with modifications on the carriage hand wheel ( Vernier dial)l and quick release on the cross slide, I believe these were manufactured for DIY fitting. Are these mods still available ?

Thread: Why has my mild steel bent
03/08/2023 20:45:47

I have tried to machine a little off both sides on connecting rod and numerous other narrow cold rolled steel parts.. They always bend like a banana. Black steel gives much better results when machining these type of parts. The only issue is there is a very limited size options when purchasing black steel stock. I believe all stock is now metric sizes.

Thread: Involute cutter
20/07/2023 18:29:07

I only have the single gear to work with. I cannot see any 35DP cutters so I will give the 36DP number 7 a try.

20/07/2023 17:39:44

I have been asked to produce some small gear wheels.

The dimension of the sample is as follows.

Diameter across the teeth.......0.467"

Approx PCD.......................0.400"

Number of teeth ...............14.

Using my limited knowledge of gear cutting. I work out the cutter would be

36 DP number 7 cutter to be the cutter required. Could anybody confirm my calculations ?

Thread: M6 x 0.75 LH metric thread
10/06/2023 18:55:15

I purchased a die from China, not sure what quality it will be. This afternoon I set up the Colchester and cut a good M6 x 0.75 LH thread. So the die may be good to clean up the single point cut thread.

10/06/2023 13:38:11

I need to make some M6 x 0.75 LH metric screws. Easy with the correct die, As these dies are like hens teeth. I looked to my imperial Colchester Bantam to cut the threads. As the lathe is new to me I'm not sure as to the change wheels and gear box lever positions to select to cut this metric thread. I have a full set of change wheels. Could somebody give me some advice on the correct lathe set up please.

Thread: M6 LH die
09/06/2023 14:21:07

Many thanks, all sorted except I now find the thread is M6 x 0.75 LH Cannot find a supplier of a die that size in the UK. Unless anybody knows differently.

09/06/2023 12:35:22

This might sound stupid, I just purchased a M6 LH die to cut some threads. I cannot get the die to cut the thread. Do you have to reverse the direction of the die compared to a standard RH die ?

Thread: Colchester Bantam 1600
01/06/2023 12:17:36

Both my S7 and my Bantam 1600 have rolls to play in my workshop. The much large bore on the Bantam has major benefits, but I would not want to work at small BA size work on it. That's where the S7 comes it to play.

As a regular user of M-Machine, their catalogue prices are way off the mark.. Add 50% minimum. now use eBay for most of my purchases.

Thread: 5mm square hole
13/05/2023 14:41:16

In the end I did as Rod suggested. I milled a 5mm slot from an external perimeter, then silver soldered a piece of mild steel giving me a 5mm hole. Always a good source of suggestions on here. Thanks

12/05/2023 08:08:43

Pgk I thought of making them is two halves, but I will have to produce the square hole through 1/4" of steel and then make twenty of them.

11/05/2023 16:44:37

The metal is about 1/2" thick but the square section is about 1/4" deep as there is a larger diameter hole which takes up the other 1/4"

11/05/2023 16:39:47

I have been asked to make some tap levers for BSA air rifles. The parts will be mild steel and have a 5mm square hole passing through the item. I have spent several hours using files to just about complete one hole. Is there a quicker way to produce the hole other than filing ?

Thread: 8 mm lathe tools
03/05/2023 20:51:10

Thanks Jason, money spent.

03/05/2023 19:24:39

Got a budget of about £125 for about 4.

03/05/2023 19:02:26

looking to purchase the most used indexable lathe tools 8mm square. Are the ones from china any good.?

Thread: Metric die
26/04/2023 13:24:45

A die without a split is what we called a die nut. Used to repair damaged threads not to cut a new thread. Basically a repair tool rather than a manufacturing tool.

25/04/2023 20:32:17

Looking to purchase a M6 x 0.75 left hand die. Loads in China. Does anybody know of a UK supplier ?

Thread: Machining EN3b mild steel
17/03/2023 18:32:20

Hi all

I have a small project using EN3b mild steel flat bar. I purchased the closest size to the finished dimension the original size is 1/4" x 5/8" the 5/8" requires reducing to 7/16". The finished length is about 7" After milling the bar there is a noticeable bend in the bar. How do cure this problem ?
