Where have all the Mondeo's gone

Saw a new Mondeo the other day and it suddenly struck you don't see so many of the once ubiquitous repmobile these days.

On a 120 mile trip up the M4 I counted 5, everything else, Mercs, Audi, BMW etc.

Ford sales must be really hammered.

They are surprisingly expensive when you upgrade from the basic Mundano so that you have a few bells and whistles. The EU large car market is quite crowded, which I guess is why Honda decided it didn't make any sense for them to continue selling the Accord in Europe.

And of course, over 90% of these new vehicles are bought on this PCP finance scam ie many of the "owners" probably couldn't really afford to buy them - false status indeed!

I had a company Mondy from '06 to '10, and I think it was the best company car out of the 10 or so I had in my working career. I think that period represents a time when Ford's design team had it right with both Focus and Mondeo - both were extremely reliable over very high mileages, with an unfussy general design and good fuel economy even with the 2L versions driven hard.

It's a pity that they seem to've lost focus since (groan - pun not intended).

I used a Mondeo 1.8 Estate from 93 til about 98. Driving longer distances in that car was great, super comfortable seats and really easy to drive, loads of space too.

Still a few old ones about.

All 4 Mondeo owners at work had front springs fail. 3 of the four got rid of the car because the no-longer trusted it. Number 4 wants a car as big & wide as he is, and the Mondeo fits the bill so he's not changing.

My dad's job once involved sharing an office with a succession of interesting characters en-route to new challenges. One of these chaps answered an ad in the local paper for a second-hand car and was invited round to take a look.

When he got to the address, it turned out to be a minor stately home in large grounds near Bath, where he met the owner - one Arnold Weinstock. Remember him? His obituary describes him as Britain's premier post second world war industrialist. At the time he was making huge profits with GEC.

What car was the super-rich industrial magnate selling in the local rag? He drove a very ordinary Ford Cortina.

Indeed, following on from Weiinstock, in the 70's I worked a part-time (off-shift) car parking job at Heathrow. One day a pair of Fiat 500's arrived and I took Lord and Lady Rothschild across to Terminal 3 in the minibus.
Made a change from the Ferrari's and Astons I suppose.

I think automatic gearboxes are popular as no one makes a manual like Ford.

A supposedly true story on company cars. At a dinner party boring yuppie was banging on about his latest company car, how wonderful it was, how fast it went, what super handling it had, a Porche of course, doesn't everyone have one, The guy next to him was rather quiet, saying little, so boring yuppie turned to him and pointedly asked what company vehicle he had in a very condescending manner. A Tornado the quiet chap replied, I'm a Squadron Leader in the RAF. Dead silence from the yuppie, completely put in place and shot down.

Simple ! Thet got crushed then shredded and shipped to China to make the cheese grade bolts and screws that you buy from your hardware store

My local minicab company uses Mondeo's, so I still see quite a few of around. Stopped buying Ford's years ago, bits kept falling off them and them and customer service, don't get me started on that one. We went Korean, long warranties, well made, well specked and good customer service.

I drive a Mondeo estate, solid/reliable and never less than 50 mpg. This one has 90,000 miles on now previous Fords over the last 40 years have all topped 150,000 with little or no work.
