Raw black rubber

I don't suppose anyone knows where i could buy say a kilo or 2 of raw black rubber ? . I hope to vulcanize it myself in my own mold , in the oven, when my wife is out...Does it ( raw ) have a shelf life , does it dry out , do you keep it wrapped ?? Baines rubber is near me , I'm sure they use it , but the jobsworth on the counter is negative about selling me a bit !

I don`t think there such a thing as raw black rubber ,its latex which is a milky colour.Or dried latex dissolved in solvent To get the black stuff its mixed with carbon black pigment and sulphur plus other things.

I assume you might have been watching that bbc4 programme about plastics????

Your house would stink to helI.  I  have a large container of latex which stinks of ammonia . The ammonia is added to keep it in an emulified state  but shelf life is limited.

Black rubber - all sounds rather.....................??

No idea on a source, but I spent a couple of weeks in the rubber moulding department at BAe Brooklands during my apprenticeship. They manufactured non standard seals and mouldings for both prototype and production use. There was a great variety of raw ingredients, which were mixed up and milled before moulding and curing. It really was like cooking, the recipe had to be followed exactly or the result was a disaster. Looking back on it now there was so much I picked up in those days, it just needs posts like these to jog my memory.

I have a load of 30mm round P.U ( black) rubber bars if that helps?

It' for a thick gasket rubber moulding .. My prototype mould is a bit rough but it's producing what i want with low melt casting rubber . I'll put some pics up. I'd rather not use urethane rubber as it's a bit pricey !

It's a foglight gasket for a Ford Fiesta mk1

2 rectangular plates and spigots will make this sides shape, then a clamping plate on top (and the top corners need a shallower radius I know , hence it's only tacked together at the mo . )

Low temperature (supposedly ! )melt rubber stuff., trial fill ..

Step on the swage line just right !

So I want to put the rubber dough in the mould bolt through the middle clamping the plates till it oozes out , and then cook  it .  These are impossible to get now , and they perish ..

Pop out here. I'll give you a couple of kilos for free.

I have 25 acres of rubber trees being tapped, we just sold @ auction yesterday, cup lump (yes it does pong) at roughly 0.67 pence per kg.

Perhaps try some of that self amalgamating rubber tape used for sealing cabling, You may need a a few reels though. Strip off backing and layer it and see what happens when you apply a little heat and pressure.

I have been using cheap hot glue gun for this sort of job. Buy some black filler rod and practice a bit, just refitted mud flaps on my motor and looks quite good, by my standards anyway.

When I was helping a guy building, and rebuilding Willys Jeeps, I made some molds, and a firm in Christchurch(NZ) cooked them up. The molds cost me next to nothing to make, but I was told that their value would range from $NZ1000 to $NZ3000. What sort of rubber do you need, most of ours was done with 5011 Hy Car Nitrile rubber, this stuff is fuel proof.

Could use silicone casting rubber from www.mbfg.co.UK the red hardener stuff, 20 shore A, is excellent. Takes 8 hrs to cure, can be coloured and if a mould release is used, it can be used as the mould too. The Polycraft GP 3481-F is stuff I have used, and bought some more after finishing the first 500g. Only the hardener is a bit unpleasant, the main component is inert, as is the cured rubber.

Have you thought of trying plumbers adhesive mastic, Tigerseal or similar? This is thick black and sticky but dries to a rubbery consistency and would probably hold a moulded shape.

I don't know its longevity but the outside galvanised tank that I glued up a couple of years back is still holding water.

Could You go to a tire retreaders and get a sample?
