Interesting micro lathe just sold on ebay. Not one I have seen before

**LINK**

It went out of the price range I would pay before the auction ended but I had a feeling some one would bid right at the end - they did.

Looks very much like a Taig/Peatol type

I wondered about that. I know that Taig or Peatol did make something other than the current one. I went to a model engineering exhibition ?? years ago and some one was berating Peatol for spoiling the lathe and cheapifying it. This one does look entirely sensible.

Thanks Rod. Never thought of that. Probably influenced by an older Peatol - if such a thing exists. I have always wondered despite the earlier comment.

That's a Sherline, mates got one, his was I think made in Australia. I haven't tried it, but for it's size looks quite a good little machine.

That is weird.

A hour ago I got a list of 'alternative items' - basically several 5" lathes.

Now I see the original listing with 'bidding has ended' but the images are 'unavailable'.

Maybe it depends if I'm signed in or not?

I just clicked on the link Neil using a browser that has never been logged into Ebay. Still works for me including the images.

Then tried from a browser that is logged into ebay. Same result except had to click see original listing.

Looking at it the tailstock is split. That has been updated to one which closes onto the dovetail bed in the more normal way so suspect it's an early one. Looking at what Sherline say about the over all accuracy of the machine it doesn't seem to be as good as would be expected on a small lathe of this size.

I wish I had space for this one. It's bound to need a thorough restore.

**LINK**

The shipping charges seem to be remarkably low.

I have used a lathe of that sort of age. It was at the back of what was called box bench where I was trained. It had been there for as long as the building had and scarcely ever used. The finish was amazing and the sounds of the flat belts running was pretty good too. There is something sexy about the noise of the joints going over the pulleys.

Box Bench - well it started with a 4in cube of steel and a hand file. It finishes up as a just under a 2in perfect cube. Later we made our tool makers chest out of sheet steel. Hence box bench.

Works now... ?

Not the first time I've seen this with expired ebay pages. I wonder what causes it.

Ho hum!

If any one bought I suspect they would have to pray that it had replaceable bronze bearings.

frownI could be tempted but I just haven't got the space.

I might be tempted to put it somewhere to gaze at in admiration.

I don't have the space either (or spare cash), and know the wife would not allow it to stand in our living room.crying

It's an early Australian made Sherline, before the rights to the lathe was sold to Joe Martin, have a good look at the headstock and you can see where the Sherline 'stick on sticker' has come adrift.
