Am I the only person here who's never had food, or what passes for food, at McDonalds?

I also have never eaten their products and will never do so.

I have eaten plenty of MacDonalds. I can't say that you have missed much. But nothing all that terrible about it either. Probably healthier than fish and chips, but nowhere near as satisfying!

The worst MacDonalds I ate was in Hong Kong. Something definitely got lost in the translation there. Ironic in a city of great food, which we ate every day for several years.

I do quite like the apple pies.

Rob (playing devil's advocate)

Yep, they are quite nice, but any resemblance between them and an apple pie is purely coincidental.

Well I do like the occasional McDonalds.

And I'm happy to state that!

Well as the thread starter I only thought it fair to put my hand up to all the guys who have never eaten fast food or frequented them.

As a teenager we used to visit the Wimpey burger joint regularly.

Also if anyone remembers the Golden egg group.

Burger king.

KFC.

Pizza hut.

Chinese takeaway.

Indian takeaway.

Valentino's.

Nando's the list goes on. I actually cook a lot at home using fresh ingredients but still go out to these type of places a bit. If i did not my Grandkids would disown me i guess. Only this evening we had 2 senior Fish & chip meals. I thought i was quite normal. But after reading some of the replies here i am not too sure now.

Steve.

Land & Sea (Fish & Chips) from a newspaper. Now that really does get the old memory cells going. Where I lived 60 or more years ago it was a staple after a Saturday night out. Eaten whilst walking the last half-mile home!

And, of course, just about every village used to have their own F&C shop.

Must stop this reminiscing, it isn't doing me any good.

I suspect that you need to have had close to too many beers to enjoy an elephants leg kebab but they are most enjoyable. The trouble with the beer munches is that they occur when your judgment is impaired.

OH if only there was one over here, Aurther Treachers is probably as close as I'll get. A real F+C and a ride on the Flying Scotsman would do in My (pathetic) bucket list.

We have one or two DPs around here who've open F&C shops. Still doesn't seem the same as I remember it. Although the best local shop in London that I can recall was run by a Greek. surprise

Hi Steve,

Not sure about the milkshake machines, but there's this video about their icecream machines on youtube.

If you had a low opinion of them before......

I don’t eat McDonalds, I had it years ago as the grand children wanted to eat there, I was distinctly unimpressed, however on Thursday was in London for wife had an appointment at St Thomas’s hospital. On the way home we were in Victoria Station and wanted a coffee, my daughter who was with us said I’ll get you one from McDonalds, I wasn’t impressed but she said their coffee was good so I accepted, have to say that the coffee was very good, so I wouldn’t eat there but I would have their coffee any day. On a journey we look out for services with a McDonalds rather than getting coffee from "Megabucks" or "Costly". Does anybody know if the French "McDo's" still give you a small dark chocolate with it?

That explains everything. Being told for over a year the machine is off. Thanks for the link.

Just noticed this post, there's no such thing as junk food, If you have a McDonald's once a week it won't harm you. I quite like a Mcdonald now and again I also have a steak at Wetherspoons , these posts feel like a snob thing to me.

I agree, except in so far 'Junk Food' is useful shorthand for cheap fare full of fat, salt and sugary goodness! And as such junk food fills a gap - for me usually when travelling, or when I'm too tired to make a 'proper' meal like Baked Beans on toast, but there are many occasions when convenience food is a handy option.

Might be a snob thing, but I suspect small-c conservatism plays a part too: the older me is increasingly reluctant to try anything new! Anyone else remember the joys of curly sandwiches and BR brown windsor soup! Back in the day, British food was either wonderful or horrible, mostly horrible unless you enjoyed gristle or time-expired chip shop oil. May have been accepted because most people where taste impaired smokers!

Am I the only one to have tried everything from Scorpion in Candy to posh restaurants? Classy restaurants usually. not always, serve excellent food but I'm not convinced they're value for money. The best meal I've ever had was fish, chips and mushy peas. Wonderful because they'd just changed the oil, and I was cold, wet and very hungry!

Remember the craze for 'real beer'? Started I think as a rebellion against poorly kept beer and the brewery's attempt to improve keeping with mass-produced homogenous beers like Watney's Starlight. Starlight was a good bet in many pubs, as were chilled lagers, but not as enjoyable as a well-kept conventional beer. Trouble was many pubs struggled with conventional beer and it was often more-or-less 'off'. Not that it mattered after the fourth pint.

Any wine buffs on the forum? Strong evidence that fine wines are believed to be superior despite blind testing showing that no-one can tell the difference between them and less expensive brews.

National taste is peculiar too. Americans think the nasty gritty stuff sold by Hershey is chocolate, and have a peculiar notion about cheese. Scots eat salted porridge and sheep stomachs full of offal. Spam is the Korean national dish and for decades after WW2 the British preferred ice-cream with no cream in it. British bangers are so called because sausages full of water go pop when fried. No way would I eat Norwegian Rakfisk, or live octopus in Japan. Demonstrating I'm a real man by competitively eating an extra strong chilli seems insane to me.

A lot of this stuff is all in the mind. Mere facts matter little when we believe something to be good or bad. I've deliberately eaten horse, it's rather nice. Strangely many Brits jibe at eating Black Beauty for sentimental reasons that don't apply to Larry the Lamb.

We're all bonkers.

Starlight was like making love in a punt, recently had Corona draught lager which I struggled to detect any taste whatsoever, I suppose the wedge of lime served with the bottled version is there to at least add something to a taste free product.
