And your time is worth about 50p per hour if you want to sell what you've made.

Thread: Help needed - Firing up my grandads steam boiler

I'm not a clever as you Martin, but surely the pipe from boiler to engine on a small pipe will help.

If your safety valve is working nothing can go wrong, if you're worried about that then don't use it.

It's amazing what you find in dad's odds box,I've got a few of those fittings. Back in the 60s my dad had a concrete double garage, dad was very handy being a maintenance engineer at Vauxhall motors would tackle any job but electrical was not his best talent. He installed the electrics for the garage, proper cable ,lights ,sockets the lot. Mum my sister and me use to say that sometimes we would get tingles from the taps especially when dad was in the garage, this went on for a few years, he never come across this as he was not in the garage. He got a electrician around for some internal work, he found that the garage had not been earthed correctly causing the tingling on the taps. I can't imagine the electrical accidents in those days though lack of proper maintenance and procedure.

Thread: The crumbly concrete problem
03/09/2023 07:56:09

I've had all my concrete fence posts replaced this year, they actually fell apart with just the rusty steel reinforced bars intact. These posts were around thirty years old, you can see the the air holes on that have bubbled to the surface as the concrete set. The contractor said he has seen many posts like mine, hopefully these new posts will see me out.

I worked in Germany for a few years from 1980,Krupp Atlas, at that time you were aloud to drink alcohol and most German's had a fridge next to the bench that was shared by a group. Being English and working nights these devices got robbed and this resulted in them being chained up , we could by Beck's beer and bring that in along as the security had a few bottles. Many a time I had seen Jock come in drunk for his shift and be sent home by the foreman. One night a chap was using the guillotine cutting straps, his both fingers on both hands went under the gripping bar and his finger ends got flattered like a four leaf clover. We were all skilled sheet metal workers but the jobs were broken down in stages ,you only worked on one stage at a time so the job was semi skilled, that's why the German's were more efficient and productive.

My HP ink printer has been giving me problems ever since I bought it so have decided to buy a lazer printer. It's a mine field trying to buy one, a lot of choice but I'm confused what to buy. Any recommendations for a light use printer please, I have windows 10 Lenovo computer. I've had two HP printers the other one was also a problem so I'm not interested in HP.

Buy a old cheap mechanic clock on the auction sites, strip it down and put it back together ,take photos of each stage when taking apart.

I've brought a Setright bus ticket machine ,I am taking it apart taking photos, as there's no manual.

Thread: Boring a 15 mm hole 240mm long
08/07/2023 07:34:10

Thanks for the replies. As its a replica the replies state theirs no need for a straight through bore. My uncle made a flintlock many years ago and my first effort is not up to his standards, he did make it at work soimg-20211025-wa0001.jpg must of made the barrel bore in one go, his gun all works but has no charge hole so safe. My first effort is not up to his standards but the lock works perfectly, the hardest parts was the pan and frizzen to make. This is a photo of my uncle's gun my first effort is under flintlock in my albums. A nice cannon Mick made its a shame you can't try it out, but the law won't allow it,it's odd that you can buy all the ingredients and make gunpowder, two really as charcoal is easy to come by.

Hello all. I'm making another flintlock pistol but my main problem is the barrel, it's 240mm long with a 15mm hole through to the end, the outside will be tapered. The last pistol I made I used a 25mm pipe and cut the taper then silver solder the joint, It looks OK but it's not what I want to do. I also tried to make the barrel in three parts, silver soldered them together and machined the tapered, but that was not successful. I have a 9x20 lathe, any idea how I can make the barrel, it's a pistol to be non firing, the most difficult part to make is the barrel.

Thread: Night vision monocular
01/07/2023 11:43:51

These two photos one with the lens cap off,the other lens cap on with the 2mm air hole. I took the photo through the lens.20230701_113041.jpg20230701_112853.jpg

01/07/2023 11:26:30

The answer to Robert Atkinson 2 is in the photo I hope. I'm at the stage of sending it back because I think it has a fault, the problem is that theirs no helpline. What also is odd is that I can almost see the same out of the monocular with the lens cap on as it has a 2mm air hole, just a slight difference with the lens cap off. I would liked to have tried a few monocular first but no outlets or shops around my area.

Thanks Bob 16882061119313641551210609329941.jpg

Hello all. A reply to my question about a night vision monocular. I brought a Bestguarder 6x50 it has a camera and video recorder, it's well made but I'm a little disappointed with it. I done my homework using reviews and YouTube, plus advice given here. Am I asking too much from this monocular, it states that it can be used daytime, on YouTube it shows a clear images of objects, mine shows a fuzzy image like a cheap digital camera. At night it works as good as the YouTube images. Another point is the lens cap has a air hole which is about 2mm, I can see during the day through the hole almost the same quality image with the cap on or off. I am wondering if the monocular is faulty or not,any thoughts please.

Thank you Robert for your information, more complicated than I thought, I shall do some homework with this info.

Again thanks. Bob

Hello all, I'm looking to get a night vision monocular, I've seen them priced quite cheap. Any recommendations for one of these, there're are two types that work on heat and light on the subject your watching.

There's so many monocular on the market that it's hard to choose, a midrange monocular is what I'm willing to pay.Ive got a field at the back of my house and would be interested to see what animals are around at night.

Thanks Bob
