You'll see Katy has already given some feedback (thanks Katy).

The marketing department told me that if it was unpopular they would pull it, they have already given the OK to do so - before 9:00 am but please allow a while for the change to take effect.

.

Thanks to all involved in this very wise decision star

Apparently the deed has been done already. An ad will be appearing on the right hand side later today.

It was here 10 mins. ago when I logged in, was about to delete this forum, I didn't see anything at all about the problem. Must have been asleep.

Ethan Zuckerman - the 'inventor' of the popup add, has actually apologised to the WWW community for his creation, stating that ' we ended up creating one of the most hated tools in the advertiser’s toolkit: the pop-up ad., and ' I’m sorry. Our intentions were good.'
He also said '“advertising is the original sin of the web” and that “the fallen state of our Internet is a direct, if unintentional, consequence of choosing advertising as the default model to support online content and services.”

In general, I never watch or look at adverts. If I want something, the fact that it is being advertised does not affect my decision one way or another as for my shopping, I trawl through the relevant websites looking for the item concerned. And I certainly don't succumb to marketing blandishments and rush out to buy the latest all-singing, all-dancing must have piece of 3rd world produced junk just to keep up with the next door neighbours. This applies not only to this website, but to just about everything else, indeed, I often record a television program and then fast forward over the ads. Alternatively, I go channel hopping until the ads are finished.

I'm well aware that adverts help to pay for, eg, forums such as this, and whilst I detest pop-ups which override the essential stuff underneath, as long as there is that big X in the top right hand corner, then it's not too bad - provided the advert doesn't keep repeating. What does annoy, is when you cannot get rid of the advert until a certain number of seconds, or minutes, have passed - I find YouTube to be the biggest offender in this respect along with DVD players where the manufacturers have cravenly given into the so-called "Creative" industry and made players which can be prevented from fast forwarding until the unfortunate viewer has been forced to wade through various adverts for second and third rate films which you probably won't buy anyway.

All in all, this problem isn't that bad, annoying yes, and I'm glad the forum owners have seen sense.

Regards,

Peter G. Shaw

Neil;

I am a subscriber to both ME (print) and MEW (digital).

I do tend to browse from different computers, sometimes in different parts of the world, without logging in. I'll log in if I want to post something, of course, and if I'm on a computer/network where I don't mind my connection being scanned.

So, quite possibly some of the "zillions of visitors" may actually be subscribers, sans the login.

John.

> proportion of Number of subscribers to Number of visitors

There are many more visitors than subscribers, and only a proportion of subscribers use the forum.

Neil,

As I use several devices I get logged out so don't bother logging back in so users like me will probably skew you figures.

The numbers are really, really big so it would need an unfeasibly high proportion of registered users to be using multiple machines to skew the figures enough to worry about.

Also the number of complaining members here is such a small percentage of the actual forum membership (which I do know how many). Its just the regularly active minority that are posting their objections.

This is literally one of those cases where 99.999% or more have not been bothered by the pop up or just closed it and got on with thingswink 2

I saw the advert pop up a few times. I just closed it. I cannot even tell you what the advert contained. With years of Internetting under my belt, I have trained myself to automatically dismiss the trash without thought, and just read what I want to read. Ads and trash are everywhere now, you just got to learn to switch off to it, because it is not going to go away.

Its a dumb pop up, I found out the hard way... when you get an email advising you of a post and click on the link it takes you to the site. If you do as I did and immediately scroll down to the bottom of the post to see the latest comment before the pop up has time to act you do not see it but the screen greys out and makes the screen inoperable, as the pop up is modal. I thought I had a virus and logged out immediately. as I said dumb.... The better ones would have followed me down the page.

I wonder how many visitors reacted the same way as me.

As far as logging in is concerned my machine will not remember me. I have to log in every time I visit so I got the pop up every time. I run Windows 7 and IE.

Regards
John

Michael, I may not be much good at English but I can do the maths, you are indeed in the 0.001% of the forum membership that have complained.

Actually I should not have edited my earlier post and stuck to the 99.9% I originally wroteembarrassed thats what comes with rushing to get back to work.

In which case you are 0.1% which is still a small minority
