Did get something annoying years ago from an advert but that roll-back to a couple of days before option in XP fixed it I think if you visit porno sites, or you're running a multi-pooter business, or an internet website, these things matter and are a definite risk, but for me as someone who visits about 10 basic sites they've never been an issue The scaremongering industry is very profitable, always has been ----------------- edit: keeping a low profile nowadays is the way to go IMO. Everything you do is recorded at the ISP level and new employers want to see your internet profile/s nowadays so they can look at your life in detail, so a virtually non-existent internet profile simplifies things. 615 forum posts 21 photos | After having endless problems with XP, corrupting files, esp. photographs, I moved completely over to Ubuntu (Linux) which uses Firefox, but retaining Gmail for correspondence. It works beautifully! Never had a problem in about 5 years of use. The Ubuntu package is free, and contains spreadsheets, word processing, etc, plus numerous other software to be downloaded (LMMS for a MIDI synthesiser, for instance) I am not a computer geek, it's as easy to obtain as Windows, very similar in appearance & use, and the various programs are Windows compatible, ie can read and be read by. Hi Harry, Safari may be high only because it probably came supplied with the machine the user is using...which is probably an Apple something. When I have issues browsing a site with Safari on an Apple something, I switch over to Firefox. This site is a very good example. If I want to make a post on this site using Safari, I have to change the way I deal with it. I think that is personal choice. For our business, it becomes more critical. ARC uses Firefox, Chrome, IE, in that order, depending on what site we are connecting to, for ideal functionality. When things go wrong/updates, especially Java updates, Royal Mail prefers IE, where as DPD loves Firefox and Chrome, and when Virgin broadband fails, to make any changes, its best for us to use Chrome or IE. Otherwise we would fail to get anything done. I dont think that there is any one solution to fix all - unfortunately. Ketan at ARC. |

I have ticked "never remember history" in firefox Privacy options and all those eye raising accurate internet adverts stopped for me because all your cache is wiped when you exit the program I haven't ticked "remember logins" but they do still work for me, you simply click on the writebox and your username pops up as an option |

327 forum posts 1 photos | Re the comment on Tor: I believe Tor actually 'bounces' your internet conection through multiple servers, making it very difficult to track your connections. (sorry if that is confusing - I'm trying to keep it simple). When I tried a Tor installation on my computer, it used a version of Firefox which is apparently 'tuned' to remove many of the eavesdropping vulnerabilities which all browsers have to some extent. A penalty of the 'bounced' connections seems to be that it can be very slow to download stuff (my experience). There is also a self-contained OS/Browser 'system' called 'Tails' which uses Tor and is highly secure, which can operate from a USB stick - you don't have to install it on your computer. As someone has noted, Google is notorious for tracking you (following what you are doing online) - then using the information to target advertisements and other nasties. DuckDuckGo claims not to track its users, and is similar in many ways to Google from a users point of view. Sorry to go off subject a bit - -just thought it might interest someone. edit to Tails details Edited By An Other on 24/01/2017 19:17:17 |
