Thread: oil blackening |
30/04/2021 07:50:07 |
Posted by noel shelley on 29/04/2021 22:58:49:
Will it work on cast iron ? Noel I wondered the same thing..? For steel, I'm not too keen on used engine oil, I find that organic (vegetable) oils give a noticeably 'blacker' and more even finish - linseed gives very good results.. |
Thread: How Do I Open Walker-Midgeley Documents Please? |
30/04/2021 07:26:30 |
Firefox (the standard browser) will open .pdfs - right click the document and go to 'Open with' in the drop-down and Firefox should be there, I think MSEdge will also open .pdfs.. If you know how to set defaults, then Firefox (or Edge?) can be set to open .pdfs just by clicking.. If neither of these are available, or one can just (still?) download the free version of Acrobat Reader from good ol' Adobe themselves.. Edited By DiogenesII on 30/04/2021 07:27:41 |

Thread: First steps with a Shapeoko router table |

It's a pretty substantial-looking piece of machinery, I watch with interest.. ..and maybe a little envy - looks like fun..

Joe, if it is any help in any way (and you haven't been there already) there are some useful downloads on high speed spindle /contact-free seals here, including labyrinth sections, photos, detail of design aspects: GMN Contact - Free Seals - Downloads

Thread: Hobbymat MD65 |
14/04/2021 06:54:09 |
I might try cleaning up the bore with a piece of hard wood / 'coarse rag on a stick & vinegar' or similar before resorting to the reamer - the spindles and shafts are of very soft steel on the Hobbymat. If you do need to ream, go very lightly, just the tiniest skim. The size is 1MT. |
Thread: Face Knurling... |
11/04/2021 18:50:58 |
Just musing out loud, but might there be a way of 'cut-knurling' these.. ..driving the shallow-angled corner of a wheel across the face.. ..can't remember whether I've seen it done or not.. ..only posting in the hope it might jog someone else's memory..

Thread: Loctite or Draper? Much difference? |
11/04/2021 18:28:11 |
542 is a high spec. hydraulic / pneumatic pipe sealant, if you just need a 'general purpose' thread lock and sealant for machinery assembly, use 243 which is (much) cheaper. If you need it for HP pipework in an extreme environment then you can check the suitability of equivalents from the manufacturer's datasheet. If you do just need it for general assembly, then as Clive says, any similar medium strength ('blue' ) lock'n'seal type products ought to do the job. Edited By DiogenesII on 11/04/2021 18:28:39 |
Thread: Three Cylinder Steam Aero Engine |
11/04/2021 10:45:04 |
Nice job, John - the inlet pipework looks much more in proportion to the whole. ..I rather like it without paint, too - tho' it always feels a bit cheeky to be commenting on the finish of another's engine.. Please keep us updated on the prop and other bits & pieces, it's an enjoyable build... |

I hope this fits in with this thread. It may influence the decision of the OP before he changes supplier. I have continuous problems with Chrome and Google. I get the dreaded "Before you continue to Google Search" popup each time I use search or change sites no matter how often I go through the settings I have tried various fixes from groups on the net. The last one worked for a while but I suspect that the latest update has found a way around the fixes. From online comments I see I am not alone with this harassing behaviour. Are the other browsers like Edge Brave etc, any less intrusive in your experience? Has anyone a fix that works, short of giving up? John Some of your problems may be linked to your cookie settings - if you have your browser set to 'delete all cookies on exit' or some similar setting, then every time you exit and re-enter sites you will see all the reminders, warnings, and acknowledgement tick-boxes anew. It's probably possible to enable cookies for selected (frequently visited?) sites in your browser settings. It will undoubtedly become harder to 'escape' having to accept unwanted cookies because they are increasingly a resource worth large sums of money. Because some providers would very much like you to retain all their cookies, there comes a conflict of interest in making sites easy to access for those who don't wish to cooperate or participate in their marketing programmes. FWIW Firefox is a lot less 'nosy' and with better privacy settings than some of it's competitiors.. |

Nigel, for e-mail, one can use Thunderbird - it's free and from the same developers (Mozilla) as Firefox... I use both, very happy with them. |

07/04/2021 12:16:16 |
A take on manufacturing skew gears that I'd not seen before, not a tutorial by any means, but with enough detail on the home-built set-up to be of interest to others, maybe; |

Looks very much the same as the charging lead on my Karcher window vac, but of course that's only low voltage. Is there any chance a standard figure of 8 lead would fit? I think they are called C7. They'd make the basis for a useful hydraulic press if you add a cheap bottle-jack and a couple of bits of angle.. |
Thread: Milling Attachment for Flexispeed |
14/03/2021 20:54:55 |
Looks like a good idea turned into an effective attachment - nice work. .you could make a drilled & tapped plate to bolt to the top of the slide to clamp work to, if you are stuck for a vise? |

According to this is 240mm dia sure enough.. Gascagesdirect - Cylinder size guide# ..I'd never cut someone else's property up of course, but the bigger ones are only about a skinny 3mm, sorry can't be more specific - I'd hazard a guess that the 4.5kg will be about the same thickness.. ..you could 'double-layer', I guess... |

Posted by Henry Rancourt on 13/03/2021 01:09:53:
Since I have to replace the bearings I think angular contact bearings with tighter tolerances make sense. They don't cost much more than top quality tapered roller bearings.... Do bear in mind that the original taper-roller fitment might have been deliberately chosen in order to meet some specific requirement - controlling whip in the end-driven spindle, as an example... |
