For steel, I'm not too keen on used engine oil, I find that organic (vegetable) oils give a noticeably 'blacker' and more even finish - linseed gives very good results..

Firefox (the standard browser) will open .pdfs - right click the document and go to 'Open with' in the drop-down and Firefox should be there, I think MSEdge will also open .pdfs..

If you know how to set defaults, then Firefox (or Edge?) can be set to open .pdfs just by clicking..

If neither of these are available, or one can just (still?) download the free version of Acrobat Reader from good ol' Adobe themselves..

Joe, if it is any help in any way (and you haven't been there already) there are some useful downloads on high speed spindle /contact-free seals here, including labyrinth sections, photos, detail of design aspects:

I might try cleaning up the bore with a piece of hard wood / 'coarse rag on a stick & vinegar' or similar before resorting to the reamer - the spindles and shafts are of very soft steel on the Hobbymat. If you do need to ream, go very lightly, just the tiniest skim. The size is 1MT.

Just musing out loud, but might there be a way of 'cut-knurling' these.. ..driving the shallow-angled corner of a wheel across the face.. ..can't remember whether I've seen it done or not..

..only posting in the hope it might jog someone else's memory..

542 is a high spec. hydraulic / pneumatic pipe sealant, if you just need a 'general purpose' thread lock and sealant for machinery assembly, use 243 which is (much) cheaper.

If you need it for HP pipework in an extreme environment then you can check the suitability of equivalents from the manufacturer's datasheet.

If you do just need it for general assembly, then as Clive says, any similar medium strength ('blue' ) lock'n'seal type products ought to do the job.

Nice job, John - the inlet pipework looks much more in proportion to the whole. ..I rather like it without paint, too - tho' it always feels a bit cheeky to be commenting on the finish of another's engine..

Some of your problems may be linked to your cookie settings - if you have your browser set to 'delete all cookies on exit' or some similar setting, then every time you exit and re-enter sites you will see all the reminders, warnings, and acknowledgement tick-boxes anew.

It's probably possible to enable cookies for selected (frequently visited?) sites in your browser settings.

It will undoubtedly become harder to 'escape' having to accept unwanted cookies because they are increasingly a resource worth large sums of money.

Because some providers would very much like you to retain all their cookies, there comes a conflict of interest in making sites easy to access for those who don't wish to cooperate or participate in their marketing programmes.

FWIW Firefox is a lot less 'nosy' and with better privacy settings than some of it's competitiors..

Nigel, for e-mail, one can use Thunderbird - it's free and from the same developers (Mozilla) as Firefox...

I use both, very happy with them.

They'd make the basis for a useful hydraulic press if you add a cheap bottle-jack and a couple of bits of angle..

Looks like a good idea turned into an effective attachment - nice work. .you could make a drilled & tapped plate to bolt to the top of the slide to clamp work to, if you are stuck for a vise?

..I'd never cut someone else's property up of course, but the bigger ones are only about a skinny 3mm, sorry can't be more specific - I'd hazard a guess that the 4.5kg will be about the same thickness.. ..you could 'double-layer', I guess...

Do bear in mind that the original taper-roller fitment might have been deliberately chosen in order to meet some specific requirement - controlling whip in the end-driven spindle, as an example...
