HI

When I purchased my mill I purchased a set of 20x endmills and slotdrills with smooth shanks to use in a 3mt collet holder system.

Can anyone recommend some decent cutters at a sensible price and from a good supplier..

Can't help with the windmills but for cheap endmills and slotdrills the one that I used in the video I posted in your other thread came from Richon. They are certainly cheap but do a reasonable job and will be good to learn with without the worry of mucking one up, the HSS 4 and 2 flute ones will do.

In the smaller sizes the FC-3 disposable cutters work out to be quite economic especially if you wait for suppliers to have them on special. Try Cutwell, cromwell or the weekly flyer from MSC (Hertel ones on page 13)

Alternatively, take a look at the advertisers on this site. All the ones who supply lathes and mills also supply tooling.

Should read endmills .... The wonders of iPhone editing what you type.. Strange that when I quote the text it reads correct while I type this message..

Should add the supplier has to be UK based and phone contactable because I don't use my card on the Internet.

My late father almost bought a Windmill. That would have been fun!

Anyway, I rarely pay more than £2 for a new cutter as I find them at my local second hand tool shop still boxed up for that, just can't be fussy on sizes so I I buy what is there and the odd special size for a job as and when I need them. Thing is, I now seem to have quite a lot!

Try Tracy Tools, if you don't mind odd sizes they have some big bargains, such as rippa cutters down to about £4 (bear in mind that for most cuts the exact diameter doesn't matter).

Jamie,

It does read correctly in the post ... it's only the thread Title that's wrong.

You can't fix that yourself; it will need to be one of the Moderators.

I'd leave it as it is - I like the idea of "Windmills" ( Far more interesting than boring old endmills that keep coming up here! )

Round,
Like a casting on a faceplate
Like the backgear of the mill
Never ending or beginning
Like the chuck that's on the drill
Or a centre in the tailstock
Or a green grit grinding wheel
Like a Myford lathe that's turning
Parting endless bars of steel
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the 'thou' upon its face
And the world is like a lead screw
Twisting endlessly in space
As the collet chuck unwinds
Off the ENDMILLS of your mind..... Sorry...I couldn't resist it ! W.

Wallace,

If you've composed that in the four hours since this thread was started you should be a songwriter. Superb.

Jamie, MSC that I linked to will deal over the phone.

Although some of our suppliers on the site or in the mag do low cost cutters they are not always of a high quality as you found out with the set you got from one of the machinery suppliers. For times when it matters go for the named brands like Hertel or Guhring and if your pockets are deep enough Dormer.

I corrected the text in the post but left the title as it would make a lot of the replies seem out of place

Wallace,

will you give permission for it to be published in my club's newsletter?

Windmills - this was my Grandfather's mill down in Rochester Kent - sadly demolished now.

I bought about 10 bags of end/slot and form mills from a tool and cutter grinder who supplied the motor industry. When the tools have been ground and are no longer an exact size , they are binned. Quite cheap at £10 a bag. Just the job for us lot.

Hi Gary - by all means ! It took about 30 minutes in the bath last night to 'modify' the original ... and I couldn't get the song out of my head for the rest of the night !

You could use flea bay just try a search for Dormer end mill and if you are concerned about using you card on the internet get a pre paid card so even if the details get stolen the worst that can happen is you lose what you have put in there and the chances of that happening is still remote.

Note; You can use screwed shank in an ER collet, I have quite a few that I use in my ER40 collet chuck.

One of the major contributors to ME in the 1990s I think (might have been on staff) lived in a converted Windmill.
