On projects I am already creating a bullet fairing for a Thruxton which is bespoke including all the brackets... I also have other ideas that I would like to do as well....

Hmmm I have single phase to the workshop already for the welder..... If I remember correctly I don't think I can get three phase so that could rule out any three phase machines...

As for needing 3 hp it again depends on what you are doing. Is it a business where time is money or is it a hobby? More power enables you to go faster but for one offs the set-up time is often greater than the turning time. In any case, the WM250 V you were looking at is about 1.5 hp and the bigger brother the 280 V is 2 hp so both somewhere between the Myford and the Colchester/Harrison.

The reality is that at this stage it is not a business.... But once I have made bits for my motorcycle it would be nice to sell some of it on to recover my own costs at least, anything more than that is small change on top... But I don't want to spend three house making a £14 part as that is not time efficant and you would have to ask why you are doing it in the first place... Imho

Both the bikes I have are modern.. Not sure what projects I will have in the future.. (I am a metric person, but guess I might have to learn imperial mind sets)

Hmm

Had the opportunity to have a quick chat to someone in the motorcycle workshop business today..

As others have suggested I will need a 38mm spindle bore...

But it would seem that the motors in the lathes I have been looking at might be underpowered at 1hp... Told that I would really need a 3hp machine for working on bike parts... Told to have a look for a Myford or Colchester or Harrison...

Anyone know which models would fit the bill?

Is a 38mm spindle bore acceptable for my requirements for doing Motorcycle projects? Being new to this I just know that I need a Lathe without the experience of knowing what I need to order... Also is 500 between centres acceptable?

I know that the Warco Lathes will take a deadicated milling head attachment... Is this important? I do have a seperate milling machine although I guess that it could be handy...

At this stage being new to lathes I am unsure what key features are best suited to doing motorcycle projects. I would hate to find that I purchased the wrong lathe just to save a few quid for it to cost me more in the long run..

All advice is welcome

I am new to lathes other than a few lessons in school over 30 years ago. I have been looking at getting a Lathe for my home garage workshop where I will be using it to assist in motorcycle project. I have been looking at the Warco 250v lathe that has been suggested by Warco...

I was wondering what people's views where on his forum.. Is this more lathe than I need? Or about right?

To assist me on budgets; What accessories will I need once I have the base lathe to cover most projects?

All advice is most welcome

You can... But dig has made it a lot easier to get a fast acceptable result... nice picture...

The interesting part of film photography used to be having to deal with various different lighting situations and intensity levels on a single roll.

Thread: Lathe Options Metric or Imperial

i have recently purchased a Milling Machine which is set you with metric measurements and I would when money permitting get a Laithe to accompany it. It has been my intention to get a laith with metric measurements.

But it has been mentioned to me that could be a problem when trying to cut threads as most threads are still in imperial setup even if the heads of the bolts are set up for metric spanners and sockets. Although some/a lot of automotive bolts now have metric thread sizes.

Is it correct that a metric set up Laithe is going to have issues cutting an imperial thread?

All advice is much appreciated.

hi

I am after some advice on imperial spanners and sockets as I have only ever used metric equipment to date. Although I do have a basic set of imperial spanners that rarely ever gets used.

But I understand that there are different versions of imperial spanners and sockets systems: normal imperial, Whitworth, BSF, BA, AF

Can someone in the knowledge give me some detail as to what the difference is between the different types and what (if possible) the different types were used for? I know that they are all based on the inch system (and fractions of an inch).

My main interest is automotive applications as in Cars and Motorcycles so I am keen to learn where the different system can in use.

Hi

Still here..

There are no makings on the bolt...

The bike is a Triumph Thruxton (Modern versions of Triumph Bonnevile that has a cafe race style fairing)

I have tried to up load some pictures to my album but it won't let me post them into this thread.. I have uploaded picture of the bolt, nut, bolt in location and a picture of a simular bike with a fairing with location of bolt and fairing bracket market on it. A bit of advise need

I need to make a bolt for my motorcycle that secures the engine to the frame... It is a Flange Bolt, M12, 1.25 Fine Thread. Thread Length of 56mm with a smooth shaft of 126mm, (Over all length of 194mm), Flange of 24mm and a 16mm Hex Nut on the end...

The reason I need to make this bolt is because because I want to add some brackets on to the bike and there is not enough bolt length on the original bolt... These bolts are unique to Triumph....

The bolt will need to be able to deal with Heat, Vibrations, Weather and being Torqued up tight...

So My Questions are:

1) I have had it mentioned that it will need to be made from High-Tensile Stainless Steel HSS..... Is this correct?
2) How easy is this material going be to machine?

3) Will normal cutting tools on a laithe and large amatuer milling machine cope dealing with this material?

4) Will a standard die be able cut a thread on this material?

5) It has been suggested that as the bolt is used with a flange nut I could use a length of round bar and thread both ends. Then thread the flange nut on the bar, followed by welding the flange nut on one end? Is this a feasible idea or will it be an inferrer compromise?

6) Where would be the best place to get 12mm round HSS Bar?

Howard.... to answer your questions......

I would be after a metric Laithe and most of reasons I want a laithe is for motorcycle restoration tasks, making custom brackets and bits and small engineering tasks.... As this is new to me I really don't have a clue as to how big a laithe I really require.

Hi thanks for the advice.. Not sure if 3phase electricity is available to me. Middle of a housing estate in rural area.

I have single phase 32 amp in the garage for the welder which might be as much as I can get. Will check with the sparky who installed that.

I would agree and it would be nice to just order in the very best industrial equipment... But the reality is I can't afford that and it will never be my income provider.

any main engine boring or pro skimming will always be done by a specialist... I am looking at dealing with other less specialist tasks

As some of you know I am new to milling and engineering. And thanks to everyone for their advice so far.

I have a VM32 Variable Speed Milling Machine (with DRO) from Toolco and while I get to grips with it I know that I will at some stage soon need Laithe to complement the VM32 Mill.

I had planned on getting both a mill and Laithe with the budget I had. But I seem to have blown the whole budget on the mill and the accessories. Lol

I plan on making bits and bracket ect for Motorcycle restoration and customisation..

So what would people recommend as a suitable Laithe that would complement the mill I have and be suitable for my needs? At this stage I don't know what is the minimum spec is needed.

And what accessories and laithe tools would you suggest that will I need?

This way I can start budgeting and saving...
