Hi Paul, I had thought that there was some link between the two programs but there is not.

Ihave not tried Alans program but will certainly be giving it a go after my trouble with Shop Calc.

Personally I try to avoid Windows entirely being a Linux user. However Win32 is the program interface for all versions of Windows since Windows 95. The latest 64 bit versions have an aditional interface called Win64 but most software still uses the Win32 and it cannot be avoided.

Think it's £14.99 in the UK but this allows you to download to any appliance you have like iPhone and iPad and any linked accounts.

Very good value really as the calculator is about £60 as a stand alone.

Hi Garth,

the computer I used to test ShopCalc is running Windows XP 32-bit, I have not tested it on 64-bit Windows. After downloading I created a ShopCalc directory (folder) and unzipped the zip-file into this folder and renamed the ShopCalc.ex_ to ShopCalc.exe. Make sure that your unzipping program creates a language subdirectory (under the ShopCalc folder) and an en subdirectory under the language folder (for the english version). In the en folder there should be a file called en.ini. Then just double-click the exe file.

The en.ini bit probbly does something with the settings

I have tried to run ShopCalc on a computer with 64-bit Windows 7 and experienced no problems.

Hi Guys

I am the author/programmer of ShopCalc. mechman48, ShopCalc has nothing in it to lock up a computer requiring a reboot. Windows has a habit of screwing its self up, try re installing after a clean boot . If other people are not having a problem then the chances are your computer is having a problem.

There are versions for Linux in 32 bit and 64 bit. The Windows version in its current release is only 32 bit. Windows and :Linux versions have the same look and feel.

I currently have a 64 bit Windows version running on my computer but this is a work in progress of adding more content to ShopCalc.

Reverse engineer a dovetail so that you can build the missing half. (completed)

Worm gear calculations for making a hob to cut the worm gear (in progress)

Beval gear calculations (not started)

I plan on having a reference section of standard machine tapers (because I am tired of looking up this stuff on the net).

The en.ini file is just the language file for English, nothing more.

On the first run of ShopCalc a file called "DoNotEditOrDelete.ini" is created, this file stores your preferences like metric or inch, the language you want and your preferences for indexing. If "DoNotEditOrDelete.ini" gets corrupted then you might get a crash or things missing in the dividing head section or constantly asking for your language preference. If any of that happens just delete "DoNotEditOrDelete.ini" and a new one will be built with the default settings.

The other file that is created is "State.ini". This file is updated every time you shut down ShopCalc and stores all the values you have entered on all the pages. This info is then loaded in next time you start ShopCalc, a convenience feature I put in in case you forget to note something down (as I do). "State.ini" can also be deleted and a new one will be created but "State.ini" should not cause any crashes if it gets corrupted, just fully values in input fields.

ShopCalc is a winter project for me when my workshop gets to cold to be comfortable. It does get shivery in the midst of a Canadian winter with an Arctic front hanging about.

After a couple of computer rebuilds etc I installed your program on XP pro and it is running well I like it very much.

Only problem initially was my Avast virus program kept dumping it in quarantine until I tweaked things a bit.

I have not looked for any updates, is there any?

Yes there are updates, mostly small bug fixes. I have changed the calculations for worm gears. Although I followed formulas from reliable sources the results did not seem right when you thought about them. The results now are a bit more realistic. I do not think the previous results were wrong as much as they looked a bit odd. It appears that there are no hard and fast rules concerning worm gearing but rather some general principles. We are really making a helical gear and a trapezoid thread to mesh with the gear.

I have added the calculations for making bevel gears with standard gear cutters. Also an explanation of how to produce the bevel gears with a dividing head and milling machine along with the one caveat.

There is no automatic updating mechanism, just download a new version and unzip to write over an older version. This should work however if there is a crash on the first run, delete the files "DoNotEditorDelete.ini" and "State.ini".

For Windows only. ShopCalc.exe is renamed to ShopCalc.ex_ as a precautionary measure against automatic execution, so a virus scan can be done. Some web sites and email servers do not allow executable programs hence the renaming. You must rename back to "ShopCalc.exe".
