Grumpy old men

Since when were sockets called "plug sockets". English is easy enough, a socket is a socket, if you wish to identify it for mains use, you can call it a "Mains socket".

You plug a "Plug" into an "Socket" - simple enough isn't it ? I blame it on the ignorance of the younger generation, but who taught them this bastardisation of the English language.

You may also call them Electric socket outlet as opposed to Air supply socket or many other utilities.

Same when some refer to model 2 stroke and 4 stroke glow plug igntion engines "Nitro engines", I blame the yanks for this one.

Plug sockets? My first thought was the deep sockets, usually with a rubber insert to protect the ceramic part of the spark plug.🙂

I think it's old and became necessary to avoid confusion when ordering parts in the last century. Lamp Sockets were common long before Plug Sockets became popular due to flappers buying Wireless Sets and Vacuum Cleaners. The ancient Resistance Boxes in my School's Physics Lab used Plug Switches. Widely banned on power circuits before WW1 but I bet some lasted much longer.

My 1910 Electrician's Book mentions Lamp Sockets, but apart from them nothing is plugged in. Lamps are mostly shown being wired to screw terminals on the bulb. Everything else in home, commerce and industry is hard wired via distribution boxes. It was a different world - hardly any domestic appliances and every local authority and fire insurance company insisted on different specifications.

The one I dislike is people who say “can I get a coffee” the answer should be: yes come behind the counter and help yourself!

By far the most annoying phrase is the 'younger generation' use of LIKE in general discussions.

Stuff that's so poorly designed it is horrible to use: eg electronic devices with multiple functions that are operated by just four buttons. So you have to learn sequences like press #3&4 together, whilst simultaneously rubbing your head, patting your stomach and singing the Elbonian national anthem backwards in a falsetto, just to turn on the record function.

There's no excuse for this now that small touch screens are cheap, but all the effort is then put into constantly 'improved' icons that are the visual equivalents of cryptic crossword clues.

That's because they think it's still a French word: soudure
