Thread: Wera hand-tools
04/10/2023 20:43:46

RS is probably the last place I would source tools !!!

Example: a Wera Kraftform Kompakt set is £227.06 on RS, but exactly the same set is only £113.99 on Amazon and a mere £99.00 at Plumbing Supplies Direct.

A very big cost difference, so spending a few minutes researching supplier prices can save you a lot of your hard earned £££'s

Thread: Warco V Belt Change
17/03/2023 11:33:11

Hi Justin,

Give Warco a call, (01428 682929) I'm sure they will help you thumbs up

Depending on the age of the lathe, you could even treat it to a new belt wink

Alibre Atom might be worth a go. It is paid for software but you can get a free trial it is a full CAD package not just drawing. There are tutorials on the forum and quite a few threads here about it. Try this thread to start with.

I am currently trying Freecad. I am having difficulty getting started. But at 75 years of age that is hardly surprising. I expect that I will crack it over the winter though, as there is little else to do. It is a case of finding the right set of You Tube tutorials. I did try one & it was not so good. I am on another & find it much better.

So I think that one has to decide how far one wants to go & how much effort one wants to put into it. If the answer is not a lot, then one has to go for a simple sketching one & be aware that it will not do much more than pencil & paper & not much quicker. But it will rub out & alter things easier.

+2 for Free CAD - it is immensely powerful and completely FOC . . I have found it relatively easy to learn (I'm mid 60's) and is fully compatible with almost all CAD standard file formats, and no restrictions on saving files (unlike Fusion 360 - unless you subscribe)

There are some excellent structured YouTube videos, search for MangoJelly Solutions - I have found the chap really easy to follow.

It helps if you can have the video playing in a separate device (or screen) from the one you have FreeCAD running on

Thread: Privacy Glass in cars
13/12/2022 10:33:40

Almost all new premium cars (Mercedes, Audi, BMW etc) have factory fitted tinted rear glass.

I have a MB estate, and all glass rear of the 'B' post is very dark.

  • it provides security for any thing in the back
  • cooler inside in hot weather
  • looks really nice with the cars satin black trims
  • was OEM so I didn't have a choice

From the inside it is almost indistinguishable from clear glass and does not hinder rear mirror vision, also rear passengers view is not compromised in any way.

It continues to amaze me how many (typically but not always younger drivers) have yet to work out the relationship between accelerator, brakes and tyre wear.

I also did the ROSPA advanced driving training (and managed a silver on 1st attempt at the test which I was very pleased at)

I can thoroughly recommend doing it, (you use your car and fuel) but the instructors give their time for free.

My instructor was a retired police advanced instructor and I certainly learnt a lot from that guy, and now drive to a much higher standard, but I certainly don't dawdle !!

My ability to 'read the road and predict what the other guy is doing' is much sharper than before, also my car mpg has improved and tyre wear is also much better.

+1 for Steve Fletcher

He repaired/restored my Great Grandfathers Waltham Railwaymans watch (1880's) to an impeccable standard in 2018, he is immensely knowledgeable and has spares for just about every watch there is, and if not he'll make bespoke parts.

Couldn't recommended more highly.

These Lathes are a generic type and offer good quality and specifications, almost all are made by the Weiss Group in Nanjiing, China and shipped worldwide as many different brands and colours such as Warco, Amadeal, Chester, Precision Mathews etc.

Steve

I would respectfully like to make a small correction to your comments Steve. These are a generic lathe (not made by SIEG group), but it is wrong to say that almost all of this type of lathe are made by Weiss. This is a myth spread by marketing people, and by people who have limited procurement knowledge. This lathe is made by at least four different factories, and the importers you mention do purchase these lathes from factories other than Weiss.

I politely request you to be aware of this information before spreading this information in the future.

Ketan at ARC

I respectfully stand corrected by your greater knowledge. I have done extensive research, but obviously it was fake information embarrassed

Perhaps "inspection " means shaking the machine to see if any bits fall off ?cheeky

Probably more like "lift the box to see if it seems heavy enough to confirm it is 'likely' there is a machine inside"

Interestingly it clearly states on the Warco website

  • Every Warco lathe is fully run and tested by a qualified member of our team before leaving our premises, and is supplied with an individual accuracy test report.

Irrespective of whether I was a "fusspot" or "slob" as characterised by SOD, I'd be requesting either:

  1. A discount (partial refund)

OR

  1. A replacement machine that is in 'brand new' condition
09/11/2022 10:15:00

Hi John,

Any updates on this issue ?

I would concur having purchased the same machine from Warco back in 2019, that on delivery it was plastered (and I mean absolutely covered) in a very sticky gooey 'grease' that took ages to thoroughly clean off with a solvent cleaner.

I completely dismantled down to almost every component, cleaned, fettled, oiled/greased and re-assembled, and so far the machine has exceeded my expectations and has proved to be very accurate and reliable.

These Lathes are a generic type and offer good quality and specifications, almost all are made by the Weiss Group in Nanjiing, China and shipped worldwide as many different brands and colours such as Warco, Amadeal, Chester, Precision Mathews etc.

I would certainly NOT accept the one you have in that condition and ask that Warco either:- replace like for like with a brand new one OR give a full refund so you can order a nice shiny new one from MEW site sponsor Amadeal !!! (I have no affiliation btw)

Modern car electronics are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma to me. I had, apparently, one LED fail in a rear light cluster on a Volvo V90 which brought up all sorts of intermittent and contradictory fault indications on the dashboard. The local Volvo specialist (after many years no longer an authorised Volvo dealer) had it in the workshop for a week before they found the fault and charged me £675. Obviously, I had no choice other than to smile through gritted teeth and cough up.

Some time ago I had a similar and equally weird issue on a LR Discovery 3. while driving north on the M6, there is a 'bing and the dashboard lights up like a Xmas tree and the message screen states 'gearbox fault/failure' and the car went into 'limp mode' crook

so 40mph to the nearest service stop, call the AA, and the technician duly arrives in 35 mins (I'm impressed with that) after plugging his laptop in and looking at the fault 'codes, he is then on his phone to their tech help guru, and then he wanders back and starts taking a rear light module apart, looks at one of the brake/tail lamps, throws it in the bushes (literally) and fits a new bulb, asks me to drive a couple of times around the car park.

Lo and behold, it is all fixed with no warning lights/messages yes so I ask what was that all about - he said a bulb 'element' had broken, and every time I braked it was shorting out and this caused the gear box ECU to throw a hissy fit

Never in a million years would I have guessed that one, and I doubt the LR dealer would have either !!!

Red, Blue, Yellow phase colours went out more than 15 years ago. Now it's Brown Black Grey.

Edited By Dave T on 18/09/2022 15:10:42

Only for Low Voltage !! (0 - 1,000 volts) anything higher in the UK is still Red Yellow Blue - thankfully

It was the most by most ill thought through changes that happened in Electrical Engineering it causes all sorts of issues when connecting 'new' to 'old'

Old Harmonised

Red = Brown (L1)

yellow = Black (L2)

Blue = Grey (L3)

Black = Blue (N)

No prizes for spotting where the mistakes can creep in !!!

(Yet another example of the EU imposing a change on the UK that was stupid !!)

Thread: Engineered fuel prices
03/08/2022 10:29:51

Those who think Diesel is expensive (which I agree it is) should give a thought to owner drivers of HGV trucks.

Was chatting to a driver who said his new Mercedes articulated truck manages between 5 - 7 mpg surprise

That equates to £1.77 PER MILE (at its worst)

And we all wonder why everything has gone up in price - can't wait for the 'above inflation' pension increases blush

Thread: Soft jaws
03/08/2022 10:19:20

If any of you watch 'Blondie Hacks' on YT - she made some copper soft jaw 'covers' which work really well.

They are quick and easy to make - I used a piece of copper sheet, and cut a template to suit, folded to shape so that they simply 'clip' onto ea jaw.

https://youtu.be/9YSRT1MZ3jY

obviously nowhere as good as a set of purpose 'machined' ones - horses for courses !!

A mnemonic for remembering the order of colors: Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly.

Which equated to Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Grey, Blue, Violet, Green, White (I think) indecision

I was taught a different one to that back in the politically incorrect 70's

Probably can't repeat that nowadays thinking

(first word was 'Black' and V = 'virgin'

I'm sure those old enough will remember the rest !!
