Metal Guard, it is a much thinner coat than lacquer so you can't tell it's there

Lanolin is a very good long term preservative for bright steel and other metals.

And you don't have to go to Arc to get it.

Quite so, proves the point. Have you ever seen a rusty sheep

No, but have you seen all the fluff that gets stuck to them!

Does the lanolin stay oily/waxy? as that may not be ideal inside where the item may collect dust, the metal guard dries so you don't get that issue.

Renaissance Wax was recommended in ME some time ago for conserving clocks once polished. Worked for me - no links just satisfied customer. Also apparently used in antique metal conservancy by stately homes.

Might be worth trying Owatrol or Ambersil. Ambersil is a great rust preventer but leaves a rather dull and slightly tacky finish. Owatrol leaves a very thin film but dries to a reasonably hard finish and can be overpainted.

Dinitrol used to produce a wipe on type of lacquer.

I am planning on using this product on the vulnerable areas of my Morris Traveller.

Dynax S50 is good stuff but it leaves a visible waxy coating.

I would vastly prefer to see them in their original colours. If bare metal is preferred and the surface finish has been cleaned up to the point that it's acceptable, then get the parts nickel plated (not chrome). That will look good and will last longer than a varnish.

My pet sheep enjoy being rubbed.. so available for hire.. just watch out for the burs and brambles they like to collect....

I was wondering about the merits of nickel plating the bright metal work on my model corliss engine, has anyone tried the DIY kits that are available with any success, and consistency of results ?

Not tried any home kits but have used this company a lot. They can plate 3D prints in copper (which strengthens them considerably) and then nickel giving a perfect chrome appearance as well as the more usual metal items.

If the model is going to be display only, hair spray works ok, bit smelly.
