Whoever tried to contact me asking about my Denford Orac that is up for sale please get back in touch. The automated email came through, but it had no contact details.

Agreed, don't give up but change direction somehow so that it isn't physically as challenging. 3d printing?

Thread: Hoglet - how hard to build?

Many thanks

Thanks for sending that - another Yorkshireman and another Andy

A more general question - the plans specify 2024 Aluminium alloy for the piston rods and 6061 Aluminium alloy for the crankcase. I have some 6062 stock - am I likely to run into problems using what I have?

Yes, sorry I read it that it was a possible cause but investigation was needed.

Do you know the cause of the seizure? Is it possible the sump got holed and all oil lost? That happened to my dad once when a brick fell off a lorry in front and it went straight through the sump.

I have ordered the back issues now, so looking forward to it

Thanks Jason, that is encouraging. I will purchase the back issues and have a look.

I am thinking of a new project and the twin cylinder Hoglet built from stock has caught my eye. For anyone with experience building this engine can they say how tricky it was to build?

I have a 5 1/2 lathe plus CNC milling machine and a smaller CNC lathe. I have built a Wyvern IC engine from castings (still not got it to run) and various other smaller items so I am not a total beginner, but don't want to take on anything too difficult or long winded.

It looks like the plans are available from back issues of Model Engine Builder magazine, can they be purchased from elsewhere in a bettrer format?

Thread: Long span shelving - support material

I have made some great shelves with keyclamp and scaffolding boards. Very easy to use, strong and cheap. You can paint or wax the boards.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions.

I have also noticed that some people have been really affected by the pandemic. I know people who were young(ish), fit and healthy, into sports etc who now barely leave the house and have lost interest in hobbies. I really hope that people get their confidence back in time.

Chris - sounds like who have been through the mill with health issues. Maybe if you need to move house it could be to a smaller place but still with room for a workshop, maybe a downsized workshop that could be easier to use?

That's true Phil, I went to the Harrogate show and was inspired by some of the models, particularly the 2 race car engines by Mike Sayers.

06/05/2023 17:35:11

Thanks all. Sorry to hear that others are having problems. I guess I am a bit of a loner, it would be nice to get some help with the Wyvern - I think the issue is that I made a few mistakes with the cylinder head and the valves aren't gas tight and ideally I want to remake it in cast iron. The idea of getting going again with a couple of simple pieces is a good one.

06/05/2023 12:04:37

Hopefully I can get some great suggestions here. I am struggling to get back the enthusiasm I had for model engineering a few years ago. I was really enjoying it and made a number of things, including a couple of simple steam engines, some tooling and a Wyvern IC engine. I have a well equipped workshop with 5.5 inch lathe and CNC milling machine. After I made the Wyvern I couldn't get it to run and got a bit frustrated and since then have struggled to get back into it and keep getting sidetracked onto other projects.

This seems like a real shame since I have such a nice workshop which is now not being used. What I am hoping for are some suggestions for a project that is going to rekindle the enthusiasm. Something worthwhile but not so complex and time consuming.

Can anyone help ?

Andy

Thread: Replacement lathes. Recommendations?

Looking at the cost of the machines mentioned here, I suspect that I will have to stick with my trusty old Chinese crap model !!

Anyone else in the same club ??

,In the days of old, very few could afford to pay £500 for any machine, how many could now afford £15000/£17000 ?, not too many I would think. Schools might be different.

I have often looked at some of these new machines in showrooms, but that,s all I did, just looked ! Looking at the prices, you,de need to bring a chair with you .

Machine tools have always been very expensive so I doubt they are any more expensive in real terms than they ever were.

I am interested in the idea of a makerspace. Does anyone have a link to any more information about them? Particularly in the York area
