Thread: Myford ML7 Apron rebuild
14/03/2023 22:32:28

Just popped out to take a look at my myford apron which still has original bushes. The bush above/left of the handwheel is above the front surface of the apron by about the amount you mention - but yours you say was flush with the outside?

Thanks guys (I didn't really want to lap it out!) Will give it some runs and see how it goes. Undoubtedly of Chinese origin but seems quite well made with some decent sized bearings on the crank. I have bought 'non runners' before as projects usually having to replace crank bearings as they have corroded and I will try and totally remove any remaining fuel and swamp things in oil to prevent a recurrence.

Picked up an aircraft engine at the weekend as it looked like it could do with new home!

No manufacturer name on it, the only marking is '46' which I understand is it's capacity in cu inches (7.5cc)

Guy said it has never been run and it looked new, it came with a 12 wooden prop.

Definitely never been run upon inspection but I notice that when turned over the piston gets tighter at the top of it's stroke. Popped the head off and could remove liner and all appears to have super finished piston and bore.

Reassembled with a spot of synthetic oil and on flicking it over with the prop fitted as it passes through TDC it is tight enough to squeek.

I've read about clearances getting tighter at the top of the bore but?

Should I motor it with a view to easing it in?

If it's more than 40 years old it won't require an MOT.

I picked up another the other day, lovely pieces of seamless tube although I definitely have enough now!

Thread: Never seen this before.

We had a new boiler fitted a few years ago and some time after I had a problem with the diverter valve however looking at the wiring diagram that came with the boiler it bore no resemblance to the actual wiring.

Buzzed it all out and sorted the problem but I'm convinced it was done so we had to call the installer to sort out any problems!

Just checked cylinders and they are empty - no laughing matter!

Nice bits of steel tube.

Just scanned the barcode - contents being used as laughing gas. Hospitals filling with casualties, some fatal.

Better off sticking with their playstation me thinks.

I needed a short length of steel tube recently about 3 inches diameter. While walking to our local shops the other day my eyes lit up at a discarded gas cylinder that would do the job.

Examining it later it would appear to have contained food grade nitrous oxide at 165 bar. Haven't weighed it so not sure if it's full or not. Anyway repeating the route a few days later I found another, then today returning home I could have picked up another 2! I now have 3!

These are the same sized cylinders as the disposable welding gas ones that contain argon/co2

Question is why are they being discarded is it the latest craze in sniffing?

Thread: Myford ML7 drip oilers
14/09/2022 09:40:02

My Myford has the original oilers and I found if I went out in the workshop when it was cold - they would drip enough and when hot - too much!

When using the lathe now I just give manually 6 drips and if using for any length of time a few more now and again, I have a VFD fitted and occasionally run at above it's normal top rated rpm but must be doing it sufficiently as original bearings are spot on.

I seem to remember that jet engines were tested by firing frozen chickens into the intake?

I have used RS quite a bit mainly for components - although they used to be post free.

Good service though.

I use the process for my stationary engine parts and, like you, have been most impressed even used it for the insides of petrol tanks.

I'm no chemist either!

I know your problem! I have setup my VFD's fans to only operate when needed with temperature rise I also have a simple elasticated filter fitted around the body casing.

I am attempting to connect a boiler to supply a Stuart Turner no 4 engine and a PM research horizontal (not at the same time) and have to make various unions for steam pipes, feed pipes etc.

Is there a chart somewhere that gives standard dimensions for such, cone type, fittings?

Thread: Boiler gas burner
14/04/2022 17:48:27

Had a word with Nigel from Pendle Steam and described my requirements to heat (as quietly as possible) my horizontal water tube boiler which measures 9 in long, 5 1/2 in diameter with a 2 1/4 inch flue, fitted with 8 cross water tubes.

This is an old design from the 50's and he suggested none of the burners would be able to supply the brut force heat that the original blowlamp burner would supply as my boiler is of an inefficient type!

Oh well, back to playing with Sievert and weed burners!

Thanks for your replies. Watched the video and he does state that burners and boilers are both available separately.

Although my boiler is a horizontal water tube job it appears from the video that the burner design would work in a vertical or horizontal position. I will investigate further!

The engine to be supplied is a PM Research horizontal of 1 1/2 bore and 2 1/2 stroke and seems to run quite well on air so am looking forward to steaming it.
