Thread: Pendant alternative for LinuxCNC

Hello Wal

Where did you go to get the set of custom matte vinyl stickers printed, which stick onto the blank keys?

Hello Wal,

You have a PM waiting in your mail inbox.

Thank you Wal.

So it's simply a question of buying the right keypad and visiting the 'sayodevice.com' website. Wow! think I know what I will be doing next week.

One more question. Do you replace the full size keyboard with the keypad or can you run both together?

Thanks again

Mike

Hello Wal.

This small keypad to control LinuxCNC is a great idea. I have wanted to do this for years but never understood how to redefine the keypad keys.

Please can you briefly explain how to do it? quote "I found a relatively cheap 24 key USB keyboard that's very easily programmable via a web browser"

Thank you

Mike

Thread: Titanic submersible
23/06/2023 23:36:17

Well, The Lloyds Register requirement for a pressure hull for manned occupation (i.e. a manned submersible hull) MUST be designed with a Safety factor of FIVE. By contrast, an un-manned hull only requires to be designed with a SF of THREE. Fully certified and tested submersible hulls are therefore immensely strong. Different design SF are applied to other classes of marine equipment

I think Dave is right. My understanding, from multiple reports, is there is only one way in and out of the vessel. That is via the forward hatch, which includes the sole window. It is bolted on from the outside after the crew are aboard.

[…]

.

In that case, we’re all on the same page, and I simply mis-interpreted Dave’s words:

an Acrylic Window, which maybe doubled as a hatch

Life is full of these little ambiguities

MichaelG.

Indeed. And the bit Dave quoted about said window " will squeeze in about three-quarters of an inch and just deforms" raises another big question mark about repeated fatigue cycles etc.

I don;t know that I would want to trust my life to "Acrylic is great because before it cracks or fails it starts to crackle so you get a huge warning if it’s about to fail.” Huge enough to get back to the surface from 3800 metres? I'd rather not find out.

Seems a rather cavalier attitude in a rather critical environment.

Especially so, when the manufacture of the acrylic viewport would only certify the viewport to a depth of 1,300 metres. Despite the manufactures depth limitation, Oceangate saw fit to use it on Titan operating at a depth of 3,800 metres. The acrylic viewport manufacture offered to redesign the viewport for the full depth rating... at extra cost... but Oceangate declined the offer.

Bryan,

The USCG ships and planes can only search the sea surface. They need to expand the surface search area to account for time and tide. They have no deep water search capability. not until the French research ship arrives, later this evening, with it's deep water ROV. Too little, too late.

21/06/2023 17:04:29

The French research vessel, Le Atalante, has just arrived on site. It is equipped with a deep diving, remote operated vehicle (ROV) called Victor 6000, that can reach the depths of the Titanic’s shipwreck. This is the first (and only) asset to arrive, capable of reaching the seabed and conducting a sea bed search.

Bon Chance

Thread: Bulkhead Penetrators (Getting a good vacuum seal)
11/05/2023 17:11:15

Robert, Dave.

You are right to be wary of rubber o-rings for high vacuum applications.

ALL natural and synthetic rubbers exhibit gas permeability to some degree. That is, the rubber allows molecules of a gas (air) to slowly migrate through the rubber given time. More so in high vacuum and long duration applications.

Go metal to metal if you can and minimise the number of penetrations.

Thread: Who labelled the X and Y axes for DROs on lathes and mills?
27/01/2023 19:23:38

Who labelled the axes for DROs on a lathe as X and Y? You did.

The correct convention is Z and X.

The Z axis is towards and away from the spindle. The X axis is the lateral movement, at 90* to the Z axis.

Thread: Chinese diesel heater
11/12/2022 13:44:42

Hello Alan

I've seen your external installation. Very neat.

Could you please explain and expand on

" Mike T - it could be the diesel going soapy."

Regards

Mike

The pump sticking issues, I referred to, occure using regular pump diesel.

It is well known that diesel can gum up in really cold weather. My heater always worked best in mild weather rather than in cold weather.

I have installed one of those cheap Chinese cloned diesel heater in my workshop. When it works, it is very warm and cosy.

However, I have had no end of problems with the fuel pumps sticking and refusing to pump. I have tried three different ones, they run for a few days/ weeks then stick. Not found a reliable way to un-stick them.

The problem may be that Chinese cloned products can come from any number of different factories. Some factories may get the details right while others may not.

Your mileage may differ.

Thread: Harrogate Showground
02/12/2022 16:39:28

That's rich.

The event has not yet been officially announced but already someone has had a go at slagging off the organisation. Lets wait and see what is about to be organised, before casting stones.

02/12/2022 14:33:09

Did the show orginisers give any indication as to when they intend to formally announce the show?

Thread: Best method of selling completed models

Thanks Paul

That is a very comprehensive list of dealers, longer than I expected. The list may also be of some use to those with the unfortunate task of clearing an estate

Mike

Paul,

Can you list some of the 'larger model dealers' you refer to?

Mike

I personally hate auction houses, they make far too much money from any item auctioned.

Using Dreweatt's own figures as an example.

For an item which achieves a hammer price of say £1500.

The buyer pays £2000 once the buyers premium and VAT are added

The seller receives only £1167 of the £1500 hammer price once the sellers premium, other costs and VAT have been deducted.

That means the auction house makes £600 (that's more than half of what the poor seller receives) on that sale The VAT man also takes his share,

Auction-eering is a good way to make money.        Selling model-engineering by auction is not.
