Depends. Would you tell anyone phoning that you were on holiday? Especially if a sole trader, or trade from home!

An ansafone system and reliable return call should be sufficient.

It is actually a friend of mine who has been trying to contact MJ Engineering with a view to spending a considerable amount of money.

I offered to put the message on here to see what response we got, I thought of the holiday scenario first, and agree that it would not be a good idea to tell everyone your premises were empty.

Hopefully if he hangs on a week or so, things will be resolved. But he was on the point of taking his business elsewhere because of the lack of response to calls and e-mails.

Alan usually puts a note on his website if he is going to be closed for a few days eg Holidays, Great Dorset Steam Fair, attending shows. Could holidays though his kids are past half term holidays now. He was also going to have to change premises so may have to go back to opening on only a few days a week if he cannot do machining on site which is what he used to do.

As Kwil says probably off to a supplier.

One thing I would say if ordering from MJ Eng is to order well ahead of when your friend will need parts. Castings are usually done in batches as its a full days round trip to collect them so if something is out of stock it can be a while before the next batch of castings is collected

I've been trying all week, about 10 times on the phone, but no human being on the phone, only a recorded lady saying I'll put you through , but nothing happens,

If I phone after 4pm she says" we are closed ",

I want to spend about 2.5k on 7 1/4" Bagnall boiler and castings etc, perhaps he dosen't need the money ?

Does anyone else do the bagnall castings etc ? that is likely to answer the phone.............................

I have the same problem as Alan - super busy right now making boilers and if im in the workshop theres a very high chance that I wont even hear the phone let alone answer it. If I happen to speak to him next week I will let him know (and give him his flanging plates back!).

Mark, the boiler will be about £1500 probably plus VAT, wheel castings £250 ish etc etc,

You can soon reach 2.5k , with cyl castings , axle boxes, boiler fittings etc.

With that kind of money involved, better service could be expected.

Don't pass judgement before you know the full story. There has been no lack of service here because no transaction has been initiated.

I had a long chat with Alan at the Guildford weekend. Cut him some slack, he's a genuine kinda guy and will have genuine reasons for not being as available as you might wish.

Yes he does have some other issues to deal with at the moment plus the fact MJ Eng is not his only business so sometimes he may be spread a bit thin.

Also he does not sell the boilers so that is a large part of the figures being talked about out of the equasion.

So you can't complain about the service -- because there isn't any?? laugh

It's not a supermarket, when I visited his old site he had some stock but not a great deal, but if this is an 'I WANT IT NOW' demand I doubt it will be sitting on the shelves waiting for you.

The boiler will likely be a 12 month wait from anybody.
