I have just discovered this small lathe on ebay. I have not seen it before. I have no intention of buying one but it may be of interest to somebody. The base looks like it might be a piece of steel rail from a railway track.

It might be of interest to a scrap man. Or should that be minus the s! It looks total rubbish.

From the listing it looks like it takes 5 days to get the bits and bolt it together.

"The base looks like it might be a piece of steel rail from a railway track."

I have seen this very thing done and remember a knowledgeable friend explaining why it is not the best way to provide a very stiff foundation for a lathe bed.

I think one of the pictures in the listing illustrates turning nuts!

I know that you guys have said that lathes are scarce in Australia

... But you would have to be desperate to go anywhere near that.

The flower head is between drive centres, not mounted on bar. #shgts

> Important note:Firstly the lathe you recieved probably is not exact same as picture in order to make high quality one, sometimes we change a bit for more effective woring, secondly, you should have a some knowlege about this lathe, though we may offer techinical support but it is limited

I guess that really means "Firstly the lathe you recieved probably is not exact same as picture in order to make high quality one, sometimes we change a bit depending on what we can find in the skip"

> It may works on ordinary steel, copper-based, aluminum, plastic, Timber, wooden materials, bead, prayer beads, etc

It may work -or it may not... I'm guessing that the prayer beads are an essential before you try any real turning.

I recognise the steel bar in the picture - I used to hammer it into the ground and tie a boat up to it.

I suppose they are honest, it does look like a DIY lathe, although if my workshop turned that out, I'd be ashamed to show it to anyone. I've seen a better lathe made in a WW2 concentration camp!

I wonder if it comes with a CE mark and a test certificate?

It's a clone of the Super Adept!

I think it is entirely possible that a machine tool has never touched one of those components. Some guy is probably in his shed with a hand drill and a crate of factory spares to make this.

Duncan no need to be so mean, this apparently has a standard morse taper spindle and tailstock. Can't get that on the adepts

It's been specially produced to keep the "Not fit for Purse" and "Distance selling Regulations" purists happy.

I'm so sorry Neil, I hadn't realised. Explains a bit though smiley

At least you can adjust the tailstock to compensate for base wear after 50 years of use !. It could be the new Ard hinge.......yes

Love the cross slide feedscrew nut: a piece of 3mm plate bent at right angles with a thread tappd through it and secured with whatever screw was lying on the floor at the time.

On the plus side it does look as if everything is adjustable if only because its just bits screwed together!

And to its credit, it managed to take cuts on that 'orrible bar using The Lathe Tool From Beyond Hell...

It might be an amazing buy for final price - £800. Pity about the "might".
