my local auction-house-charges + VAT add 50% to the hammer price, most of their material is stock clearance, lost property or amazon returns (often these are obviously damaged by some recipient) - often I see things go for more than the retail price once this +50% is added but there are 'bargains' in the 'unconsidered trifles' but never had a 99p to ?1500 hike - part of my remnant conscience keeps suggesting such is a form of theft on the ignorant. Many at the auctions are professional ebay, market stall or car-boot sellers and know when to stop to allow them to make a reasonable profit.

Just to be clear, I didn't mark the item (a Schaffner System 2050 EMC Impuse generator) up to £1500, I listed it as an auction starting at £50. The market set the price and the buyer (a business) was very happy at £1500 for a ystem that cost over £50,000 new. They even paid for my time, fuel and hotel to personally drive it to Scotland.
I don't make money on everything, but overall my hobby is self financing.

I did get scammed as a buyer many years ago (pre PayPal) over a £500 Tektronix portable 'scope. Buyer looked genuine, had a website etc. I won the auction an sent off a check. Check cleared but no 'scope. further enquires found the address was a "corner shop" informal po box. It was a deliberae scam, specifically targeting test equipment. The police were involved but the supposed fraudster had "spent" the money and had no assets. They added to their criminal record and got a minimal penalty. No one got any money back.
People complain about PayPal fees, but they provide a safe transfer service for buyer and seller.

This machine vice on ebay looks like a great bargain for someone. Ideal for precision work.

The Ebay vice is wrongly described, it should read 'boat anchor'

Hi, strange when you look at the item location of the machine vice and the exclusions to where it will be posted too. I suppose you could always remove it from it's repair plate, trim the rough parts back and then use it as a two part milling vice for long parts lengthways on your mill table. As far as people paying stupid money for things that you can get cheaper, I used to go to one live auction quite frequently some years ago and there used to often be power tools that where exclusive to B&Q DIY starting at a very low price, but where obviously customer returns and or with some of the standard accessories missing, but some people would bid relentlessly against each other and end up paying much more than they would if they went and bought a brand new one from the store, and that happen quite often, they must have just got a buzz from winning I guess.

Regards Nick.

Robert if you collect/repair those Tektronix scopes I have a water damaged one I paid a tenner for. It's way beyond repair but has all it's leads and probably a good source of parts. If I got my tenner back I'd be happy.

I have a pair of two castings with the dovetails already machined awaiting completion, which will probably never happen, as they are too big for my current mill. I even have a pair of acme screws out of a chuck, to suit.

Cheers

I guessed so, Nick ... it was just an opportunist post; to mention that anyone thinking of converting that ebay item might do better buying the ‘bookends’ from me

[ at less than three times the price being asked for that collection of scrap iron ]

I have been attending auctions for many years, I gave up when they went online, as there were few bargains to be had when you are bidding against the rest of the world! we used to play "spot the "more than retail" purchase!, there were generally several at every auction!!

At least I have been saved from 'buyers remorse' since the vice 'does not post to France'

Hi All,

Some while ago Axminster had some RIDER block planes on special offer, normally £24.99 these were offered at £12.99 so I bought 10 and after a while when the offer was over put them on EBay one at a time.

6 made £25; 3 made over £30 and one made the start price of £15, go figure?

Mind you, I have far too often been guilty of what my wife calls "heliumitis" at auctions, just putting my hand up for that one extra bid over what you had worked out was your limit only to later find that was your profit gone!

Cheers, Martin
