Thread: fitting piston valves to liners with molybdenum disulfide.
06/09/2023 08:50:05

Thanks that all makes a lot of sense. Yes someone else said that is far too much and best to go for a tight push fit. My liners also have a large internal slot in the middle so I am thinking of scrapping them and putting it on the outside so I can get iron rings on the valve.

Hi all

I am just reading through some build instructions from Don Young and it involves fitting some cast iron piston valves to cast iron valve liners. Don suggests turning the piston about half a thou bigger than the liner and then coating it in molybdenum disulfide powder or grease and then hammering the piston through the bore of the liner. He repeats this a few times and reckons that both components will have a mirror finish. Has anyone ever tried this or had any success with sort of thing? I am a bit sceptical about this and really don't want to trash my cylinder liners.

Thanks

You could use a dressmaking tape that is flexible or just wrap a piece of suitably marked paper around it. If it will fit on a lathe then you could use the gears on the lathe to divide it up. If that is possible let us know and we can show you how to do it.

You can run multiple motors up to the limits that they discuss on their web site. Not sure why you would want to run multiple machine.

I have a transwave rotary converter that runs off single phase and I can now power anything three phase with an extension lead. Only down side for me was the initial  cost and it is a bit noisy so you do have to switch on and off as needed.

Good but if it's aero engines that do it for you I think Brian Perkins Hydra would take some beating. In fact he did an article titled something like Finishing the Hdra before it finishes me!

I recently acquired a Kennedy 60 and one of the things I have wanted to do with it is replace the rather aging drive belt.

I have just drawn up the pulleys and pulley centres. The belt comes out at 535 mm and the nearest to this is 533 mm or 21" , belt number 210J10. I will be placing an order shortly for this and a few other things so I will let you know how I get on.

I could never get the two pulleys parallel on my saw so the belt just kept coming off.   Its been dumped under a bench for years now.

Talking of lost skills, a washing machine repair man came out yesterday to look at my 3 year old Bosch. He did the most utterly basic untrained look at it and said yeah it's broken and can't be fixed. Then said we can take away the old one and fit a new washing machine for £825 plus VAT. It was at this point I realised that they are just a scamming company who cant actually fix anything. They are just trying to sell new machines to people for a nice round grand. Didn't even say what sort of machine it was so no doubt it would be some real rubbish.

Yes I think you're right it does seem to be a zodiac.

Many thanks to you all

I am out in an old slate quarry near Llanberis and I have found the remains of another old car. How it got up here is anyone's guess it really is in the middle of nowhere.

I have bet my son that one of you will identify it before we get back to our car so does anyone know?

Thanks.

Thread: boiler cleading
27/07/2023 21:20:13

Thomas

When I made my tapered boiler I made a jig with two discs of the correct diameter at either end. They where then connected by a piece of wood to set them at the correct distance apart.

The wrapper was cut over length and rolled into a cylinder and then placed over the jig and pulled into a cone. You then have to remove material in a triangular shape to be able to bring the edges up nicely together. When you pull this into a section of a cone the ends go out of square and it is then a simple matter of marking around the ends using a height gauge. This little jig will create the underside of your cleading level and put all the taper on the top which is what you are after. It's quite difficult to explain but I hope the pictures will do it for you. I would practice with a piece of cardboard first as the material must be longer than you need before you start rolling. It's actually not that difficult when I did it for a Black 5 boiler which I think is the same shape as a Highlander.

I hope this is of some help.

Here you can see the former with the correct sized discs and spaced the correct distance apart.  You can also see the material cut from the cylinder to bring it into a cone and the way the ends go out of square.  Make absolutely sure your material is over length or you will have to start again.  Use card to make sure before you cut any brass!

The bottom edge of your cleading should be set parallel to the square by packing up your clyinder.  Then by drawing around the ends with a height gauge all the taper magically ends up on the opposite side.

Having cut the smokebox end I now have the cone flat on the surface plate and with the base still parallel to the square the fire box end is marked and cut.

Thread: r.i.p. Christmas cards?
18/07/2023 13:48:41

So a bit like a passenger going abroad then I suppose you could have gone the day before or after but didn't.

18/07/2023 11:47:38

So did you have Christmase dinner at the pub on Christmas day?

18/07/2023 02:27:07

John. Here are a few things for you. I generally find Christmas the most boring and dull day/time of the year. I feel as though I have to just hang around the house and can't really just slope off to my shed. Turkey is boring it's just a roast with a big chicken. Lee Webster described the present thing better than I ever could. Crackers are crap and just make a mess. Christmas pudding, gross. Brandy Butter no thanks Vodka Margarine would probably taste better. Wifey puts money in the cards to the Nieces and Nephews who are in there 20s with jobs and half of them never say thank you. Crap on the telly. Crap like Slade on the radio. Shops starting Christmas in September. Supermarket queues. Round robin letters, who cares (only the person who wrote it). And how many people are actually religious or go to church anyway nowdays. Go on somebody say Bah humbug to me again.

17/07/2023 03:38:14

It is a bit early, but I gave up on them years ago. My Mrs does them all now and I don't get involved. I don't want to know how much she spends on stamps. She even does cards for her family who we see every day. I flick through them when they are taken down just before they go in the bin. So a total waste of time effort and paper. People say bah humbug to me and I had to Google it to see what they were on about. So yeah im with you let them go.
