Sussex Police are handing out notices to stick to a front window. They read:-

WARNING

The residents of this property do not deal with uninvited traders

Please leave and do not return

Failure to do so is a criminal offence under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008

They are in a mix of black, white and yellow with a row of logos along the bottom ; Sussex Police, Btn & Hove City Council, East and West Sussex County Councils.

Worthing club had a speaker from the police who handed them out.

That's my physical callers "fixed" and the dodgy phone callers on the landline are dealt with by only answering recognised numbers in caller display.

Mobile always switched off but it logs numbers of callers which I only call back if I recognise the number.

Emails, "if in doubt, chuck it out" (delete.)

Any of you who need a notice like above, you can easily knock up something similar on your 'puter.

There is an organisation called Actionfraud this is a police organisation for reporting and asking about various types of scam. There is an excellent advice chat system on the homepage (+ phone).

I contacted them after receiving a particularly nasty looking extortionate email, they were already aware of that particular scam and advised where (police dept) to forward the email.

link to the Actionfraud website here.Actionfraud

There is also a system called Neighbourhood Alert (again Police) that can be joined to receive alerts about dodgy goings on in your area.  Link here.Alert

'would recommend a look at the website "Who called me?"

**LINK**

The junk calls that I get invariably spoof the calling number .... often with a local number, sometimes even my own.

. Just had a scam phone call, recorded message stated that it was from BT and that due to unusual activity on my number I needed to press1 or my line would be disconnected within 24 hours. Just hung up, recognised it as scam anyway I am not with BT. Took the number off my caller display and out of curiosity rang it, apparently the number is not in use, seems strange as it had just rung me. The number if anyone has caller display is, 01373250841 if it calls you just ignore it.

0203 numbers seem to be popular for this sort of scam. If you ignore them enough times, they seem to give up, for a time.

If the call is from a Bank, or ISP other than your own, it will be a scam, but even "genuine" sounding or looking messages can be from scammers. Some can be quite amusing, although a waste of time and effort in rushing to the phone.

Both my wife and I have received apparently genuine offers to refund a small sum that we have overpaid to someone. The only thing is that know that we haven't, so they get binned.

If it does start to sound plausible, by asking for me from an apparently real number, I say "hold the line, and I'll fetch him" the phone is then very gently put down, and I wander off to do something else. When I hear the continuous tone, the receiver is replaced.

Reporting these calls to TPS, often reveals that the number is a spoof, being used overseas.

I feel sorry for the vulnerable who are taken in by these scammers (My description starts the same way but uses fewer letters )

I was just reading this and my phone rang........" This is BT and you're phone and line will be disconnected if you don't press 1"....or words to that effect in a strong English accent. I don't have BT either, but I'm curious as to how it got through my Sky Shield. When I've got half a day, I'll phone Sky and ask them. Needless to say I'd hung up before the message ended.

I can understand that if one is persuaded to initiate a call to a premium number that one could be charged. However I'm not sure I understand how pressing 1 after a bogus introduction call would result in a charge to the receiver of the call unless the phone companies are in cahoots with the call initiators as they have to take your money and pass it to the fraudsters.

Also if the caller number can be so easily spoofed I feel that the phone companies aren't doing enough to protect vulnerable people. If the true address of a sender of an e-mail could be spoofed as easily as it appears the phone caller number can be then we could be in for a whole world of pain.

I have always assumed that if you pressed 1, or any other number, with one of these calls you would be charged a lot of money. A couple of months ago I let one of these calls run on without pressing anything. After about ten seconds I got an actual voice on the line so I tried to string her along. To me this suggests that pressing 1 or anything does not do anything.

Confused.

I have had very offensive scam and kept getting them even when blocked so called at the police station.

A young lass had had a similar email any suspected junk is automatically deleted now.

Unfortunately some genuine messages get deleted as well unless you are on my safe sender list.

I think the pressing of a number is just to tell them you are there and not an answering machine so they can move from the automatic dialler to a real person.

Heres a new one, had an email saying, 'Are you from London Clive'. I deleted it and then came another much the same. I answered this and came a repliy, 'I live near you'. can we meet up. Giving her name as Mary!

She said she had got my email addy from a dating site ? and listed a dating site page and added her Nom-de-Plume as , 'Mary-Jane' I had a look but you needed to sign up and I did not.

Now this morning another email which I did not bother to read and deleted, this even after telling her I was 82 and recently bereaved and had never been on a dating site, Whoo. She said she was, 'Gorgeous'.

At my age and a trapped nerve not very likely I can tell you! I can't even walk the dog.

Hi Everyone!

I noticed on a previous post that TPS is mentioned.

We have been on TPS for many years, but still getting unsolicited calls,so I checked that We are still on the system, and We are!

Calls on landline and calls and texts on mobiles are coming although We do not give out either numbers unless absolutely nessescary, in fact, if I go to make an online purchase and come to filling the forms out and it asks for My phone numbers, I delete all the fields and shop elsewhere!

My mobile number has only been given to trusted family members, plus the bank, so I can only assume the bank as passed it on?

Anyway, My point is, does TPS still work?

Cheers, Pete

Unfortunately this is now the world we live in, so best not to get wound up on it. Your details are known by all sorts without your knowledge, even government agencies sell your details. For example, private car parks video your entry and exit and these companies (usually foreign owned) can get all the details from the DVLA!

It is a massive industry selling information gathered silently and covertly. With regard to phone calls, I've just had another silent call, but I guess my Sky Shield put them off.

Protect yourself with a good Bank, a system such as Sky Shield and get on with your life.
