I’ve gone through three Dremel mini drills in two years, not used a lot either. Top money for junk.

I'd love to have the time and freedom to be a regular, or even a once-in-a-while, car-boot sale truffle hound; sadly, I don't. Having things delivered is really the only option for me.

I know I miss out on potentially fabulous serendipitous discoveries as a consequence, but at least the stuff I need is usually available somewhere on the Internet. Even then, though, buying what I need comes with no guarantee that I will have the time to make use of it anywhere near to the date of purchase.

Buy cheap, buy twice? Not going to watch that one.

How about buy cheap, get the job done, move on? Would you watch that?

Probably not. I’m a bit choosy when it comes to videos. I do recall his ‘cheap’ knurling tool. That was enough on the topic.

As for gillie and his list of ambiguous words - I have avoided reading that thread, too.

What a shame there are such members that just do not want to be educated. I tried not to respond to this stupid comment. but could not resist. My dad was a plonker. I looked up to him at the time , but realised after a time that he was talking rubbish most of the time.

All the cheap items i bought were not cheap rubbish but good quality items for not much money. I will be doing another video soon of what can be bought for pennies. A good example was a Mitututo spelt wrong . Height gauge 18" the digital version . Listed at around £450. I bought for £35 from a well known auction That also came with a 18" version that was vernier. So am i so not stupid as NDIY seems to think

The items that i showed were good stuff. I.E the centre drills were unused Dormer's. The knurles were of what seemed good quality, but i already had sent to me by youtuber's more than a dozen others. Which were all top quality items.

I am so sorry for posting this link to people who will disrespect my video's. It is to them i apologise. To the rest of you guy's who like this sort of content , then i will continue. By now i guess you have noticed that i am quite thick skinned & ignore mostly old men that are angry at the world for some strange reason. NDIY .You could have said. Great video Steve, or even Steve that video was not very good. To make it better you should have, ????. Most with no TV license & are skint.

Tip of the week is , you should have saved more when you were working . That way you could could visit car booties instead of planting potatoes & try to belittle others of greater intelect than you have. What are you doing in 2022.

In the morning going to have a new 190 Road 5 tyre fitted to the Ducati Multi s. Then taxing the ftype, so i can go out & do some drone footage . Then hopefully continuing with retracting wheels on the new to me bandsaw.

I am also pretty ashamed at Jason. You are a moderator on this site & also disrepectected me. By buying 4 cheap knulring wheels for a paultry £ 2. Why would you not think that in the future i would not make a bigger version & use those knurles for not much money would come in useful . I watch all your youtube video's & respect them all. Even though you never speak or show your mug.

I know i am fortunate to be able to do things others , can not do due to financial constraints, but that should not alienate me.

Regards to all.

I will be 70 yrs old in a few days & have always respected other people. I have always tried to to stay fit & well, even having Cancer twice i fight on. I hope all you members that read this post will do the same. Life is quite short , so make the most of it. Most of all do not disrespect other members like you know who does.

Thank you for reading this post.

Steve.

Oooh, you do have to watch out for them. If the name was misspelled Mitututo or similar, it is a fake. A Mitututo label stuck on a cheap Chinese height gauge that sells on Aliexpress for about 11 Quid. Stick with the boot sales and UK/US made gear. Much more reliable.

I have a "Mitutoyo" dial test indicator that cost $20 with magnetic base bought from eBay. It does a turn and has lasted 5 years or more. But no way it ever saw the inside of a Mitutoyo factory. So common that Mitutoyo list all the ways to spot a fake on their website. Easy when you know what to look for.

I wish I could find Albrecht chucks at the garage sales around here. No such luck though. Keep us posted on your treasure hunts.

I wouldn't stop posting, but you can expect diversity of opinion from people who do this hobby for a wide variety of reasons, and take their own pride in a variety of directions.

Rightly or wrongly, when I read posts that offer to educate me, I try to calculate the value of that education to my own approach to the activity, and how much of it I think I already know, before I decide whether to bother with it. And I know well that lots on here won't have the same priorities as I do. Sometimes I look at other folks' albums to see what they've made, as distinct from what they've bought - though it's often no more than a rough guideline.

I'm over 70 too, and I don't think it's worth unnecessarily ruffling others' feathers, or my own.

Sorry Hopper. I was meaning i had probably spelt wrong. Those items came from a Engineering auction It was in Sheffield. The 2 height gauges are proper items. They were just very dirty & needed a good clean.

Steve, your opening point was that it doesn't cost much to populate your workshop if you buy at boot sales. Here you seem to be saying going to boot sales is only for the financially fortunate.

Jason's two points came across as sober observations to me, and he even sugar coated the second slightly with an emoji to atone for his trademark laconism. I'm not sure you're correct either in saying he "never shows his mug".

On the subject of disrespect, it's not very respectful to sneer at others' perceived impecuniousness or to effectively claim, as you have done, to have a greater intellect than others have.

For the record, I enjoy, and derive benefit from, watching both your and Jason's videos.

Well said & i realised i was being rude afterwards. To which i do apologise. The point about cheap stuff & booties (Mainly autojumbles) is i actually enjoy looking through items for sale. I think the main one i go to is Rufforth near York. It costs £2 entry fee, but is usually massive . With all sorts for sale from new to old.

A point i might make is i am far from Rich. I have spent too much on cars & bikes. But at my age who knows what is around the corner. I do mainly live from my state pension & a small private one i took out . I now only dip into savings for the Holidays we take.

As far as Jason's video's go . I must have watched most of them & got benefit from the skill's of others.

But at least I shows I looked at the video before passing comment which seems more than some do.

OOps. I am sorry for the oputburst. No i did not know about the pic at the end. I take it that is the little picture on the top right of the box. As for the cheap knurls, I also have lots of other stuff that maybe will not get used. In fact the friend of mine that passed away had so much stuff in the workshop. I brought loads home. I have since passed on a lot of it to a Friend who does lots of machining & projects. Some were a full array of BA taps & dies + stacks of Number drills. Simply because they will never get used. I just could not see it all gets skipped. Anyway again i do apologise to you.

Steve.

No Worries, I did flick through the vid where you got those other items and who knows many of the items in all our workshops may end up a boot fair when the family have to dispose of it.

You have to look at other peoples videos to see me and be quick at that. Me and Eric who i'm stood next to are not twins, just have the same taste in bootssmile p

I dont have too much in the way of second hand kit but both my mill (SX2P) and lathe (Warco 918) I bought used and that just comes down to budget. I cant afford the very best so tend to look for the best quality I can find at a reasonable price that suits my pocket. I dont go to car boots but I,m sure there must be some good bargains to be had on the right day. I have had one or two good second hand buys from a well know auction site, a very good height gauge and an imperial micrometer spring to mind. I do avoid cheap cutting tools though I know some sing there praises but that has not been my experience, apart for a set of csk bits that are very good and cost little other items have been quite frankly rubbish.

My star buy has to be the 918 lathe though, 22 years old when I bought it and it had a number of quality mods/improvements and came with a wealth of tooling and accessories. If I had gone for a new lathe of similar size and all the tooling new I dont think I would have got much change out of £3500 and I bought the lathe and all that came with it for £700. So without doubt there are second hand bargains out there and for those with a limited budget, its just a case of finding them. Second hand tooling and machines doesnt mean a poor quality equipped workshop with the right buys quite the opposite in fact.

My thoughts anyway,

Ron

The objection to celebrating finding 'Cheap Stuff' is it creates the impression this is a normal safe way of building a workshop. It isn't! Boot sale and other discoveries depend on luck, and luck is unreliable. You can't go to a boot sale with a shopping list and expect to find any of it

Professional engineering is all about delivering to time and cost. Projects that depend on stuff turning up either fail or take an unknown time to finish, perhaps never. Relying on luck might be OK in a hobby, but even there suggesting it's acceptable to wait for Fortuna to provide the wherewithal is thoroughly bad advice to anyone who wants to get on with it!

Years wasted randomly collecting tools are gone forever.

Dave

Tip of the week - be born to rich parents, and learn to spell 'intellect'.
