It is a bit pointless attempting to withold timings and routes of FS, as they are all available to enthusiasts on a site called Real Time Trains, and the Network Rail Trust website etc.

Here for example is today's run of Tornado to Bristol TM

Cheers,

Julian

Nothing about Tornado on the link. It just says Diesel locomotive.

I think I just have enough time to get to Avoncliff to see it while having a pint at the Cross Guns.

Darwin theory doesn't apply as all these anoraks are old, and so will have already done any reproducing before getting wiped out.

My earlier post has turned out not to be correct in the last 24 hours for which many apologies - it appears FS's travels on the mainline now have the same status as Royal Trains ie they do not appear on the Trust or RTT sites due to 'security'.

Cheers,

Julian

I see that Network Rail have vetoed the running of Flying Scotsman in Scotland, north of Edinburgh, because of gauge problems. Is this a sign of Network Rail loosing faith with steam operators?

Anyway - it is the wrong colour (and a Pacific).

The job only takes a few hours to do and Network Rail didn't bother to do it

But if you do want to see the train, local newspapers help by publicising the route with outline times and dates!

My daughters kindly gave my wife and I a two hour trip on the Flying Scotsman next weekend from Salisbury.

I can vouch for the secrecy as we haven't been sent tickets yet!

.

Two thoughts prompted by this ^^^ ludicrous situation:

  1. Is it the locomotive, or the rail network infrastructure that is not 'fit for purpose' ?
  2. [see the photo] ... have they converted it to Steam/Electric dual power surprise

Just out of interest, here's what happens if you don't do your gauging checks:

wp_20160414_07_34_13_pro.jpg

This is at Derby North End Dock, my class 56 loco is not quite touching the brickwork. However, if it wasn't a 5 mph dead end line and I'd gone through at 60 mph, the movement of the loco body on the suspension would almost certainly have created some brick dust and, er, reprofiling of the platform edge.

No excuse for NR not thinking far enough ahead to do the gauging checks in good time.

Regards,

John.

Not being a railway lover nor too knowledgeable on the subject but I was brought up thinking all trains in Britain were built to the same width and height so they would all go under railway bridges and fit alongside platforms and all other railway gubbins without hitting anything so is the Flying Scotsman any different.

idea Thought - Maybe the rail system has shrunk frown
