Has anyone else tried printing one out on paper, and playing with the possible rotations to see what happens? Not that I’ve come to any conclusions though...

My understanding from talking to a private pilot/ATC operator a couple of years ago is that the media stories were suggesting laser pointers (for use in presentations) were being used against pilots, when actually the issue was individuals using these, which of course are available with dynamic stabilisation as well in case your hands aren’t steady enough to hold a 3km beam... a laser pointer such as yours is enough to distract the eye- I wouldn’t want one of these shon in mine.

...would be interested to know the longer term efficacy of these against birds as well...

Would certainly have more practical secondary uses I agree as a product- although not sure how concerned those people are who are trying scare the birds off about the long term impact on retinal damage!

Not that model specifically, but a large range offering 500m-2km are easily available these days...

You can pick up cheaper less well managed drivers for around £50 delivered if you wanted to play with one on a budget...

What about Woods metal, or one of the other very low temp metals. Comes in all sorts of similar alloys, some without cadmium, which might be preferred since you also suggested kids in the same sentence...?

The stuff I have is a very whitish silver, and certainly once pewter has started to fester on a shelf for a bit can get quite a dark grey- so possibly inverting your colour choice?

Looks a tidy etch and makes good detail on the model.

Out of interest, is there an issue with etching after soldering the hinge? Is there a reaction there, or were you hoping for less solder creep? Asking before I try to copy your techniques!

Random question- anyone come across a spanner like this before?

Actually it is effective, and varies from 10-22mm. I assume continental origin based on the spelling and metric nature, and was found in a gutter years ago.

Surprisingly useful, but never seen similar for sale? The irregular hexagonal ends rotate on the pins, in case that’s not obvious!

Will the curve be better at distributing the oil? Or is there no difference in result?

or perhaps negligible difference at workshop loadings and immeasurable?

Neil- certainly aware of Makaton, and decided against learning that for a couple of reasons while fully appreciating its benefits: I think for those whose communication may be somewhat limited and difficult for cognitive or other reasons it is a simpler form of language- designed to be easy to learn and useful to get enough message across, while not necessarily offering the full range of grammar, syntax, lexicon etc that BSL offers. I decided BSL would be potentially a longer term option for my son for the future- he’s not yet 30months old but starting to sculpt sentences himself- and while he is complicated medically we aren’t anticipating particular obstructions in learning. I would certainly not knock Makaton- are you also aware of SSE (Sign Supported English)? Uses BSL signs (more widely recognised) and thus also overlaps with Makaton but keeps the grammar of English. Which means you can speak English and sign SSE- a good halfway option- but anything to support communication for those who aren’t able to hear/speak English I encourage these days!

Dave- great to hear she’s so positive- we have heard some mixed messages including from a profoundly deaf lady who has two CI, one of which failed from day one the other which never responded as well as hoped, yet she would still encourage despite her experience. I suspect many here are hearing aid users, and potentially may be some cochlear implant users and those with sign language too. My son (2.5) is deaf, has aids but currently being assessed for cochlear implants. His means of communication is via sign language (BSL, taught via some teachers, and I’ve been at evening classes for near 18 months now, half way through lvl2) but is trying to start speaking.

wondered if there are any users with comments about cochlear/aids in the workshop, cochlear implants on motorbikes, issues of using ear defenders with aids, resources for ‘technical’ sign language etc. No idea if my son will follow my interests in the future, but he’s always interested and would be nice to know and be able to ‘discuss’ these things!

a niche request I appreciate- happy to talk via private messages if preferred...!

Not a solvent, but I had the same issue with some Bisley drawers. Hair drier made the (very old) Dymo labels slowly ooze themselves off, then IPA to remove the gunk. (The glue nearly entirely came off with the labels, just left a rectangle where gunk had built up over the years around the edge.)

Large bean can full of lead on each arm... I've seen that in many workshops.

My son wears (NHS) aids too and has since birth- every time they are upgraded they are secondhand (remanufactured) but entirely under NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence I think) guidance. The aids are always owned by the NHS and should a miracle occur and his hearing fixed they will be returned to the NHS or charged to us.
When (if?) he gets cochlear implants next year they will also still be owned by others- the external processors are also ‘secondhand’ but remanufactured- the internal implants will be single patient use... but still owned by the NHS...

I suspect you need to call round to find an audiologist who uses that brand of aid and who is willing to take you on!

I find it quite pleasing aesthetically- but one query for the clockmakers- what is the impact of wheel balance on the movement both rotationally (with that tooth tending to slump to bottom of rotation) as well as altering load on the bearing points?

Just to say thanks to WWSME for a great event- son enjoyed it, so did I- good to actually talk to exhibitors rather than blank faces sitting behind tables- and the domestic authorities have agreed to us going next year too!

ps- Apple cake was excellent too.

if you wanted a simple project Harold Halls design provides for accurately lengthed graduations. Just 'scratching' with a suitable tool bit makes neat engravings for dials, you don't necessarily require high spindle speeds...

Looks rather like the Popular Single Cylinder Vertical to me... (parts/plans still from AJ Reeves if you need anything else...?)

Hole and bung was the first plan... that migrated into an insulated flap with deadbolt for security and integrating a fixed steady... then I realised the hole would likely be within a few inches of the door frame... moving the door seems the tidier (but more radical) option?

V8- minimum distances I agree entirely- I had hoped I could squeeze an 8’x20’ container in the gap at the side of our new house- turns out I can’t... but have half built a 7’9” x 24’ timber workshop instead... the property boundary is the dictating aspect- but having modelled everything (currently) owned to fit into workshop, and planned space as carefully as I can (with clearances and buggerance factor) I should still have full access to the lathe with long through spindle access (via an open door when needs must) and if I move a cabinet should just about have space to get the the motor... hopefully...
