Thank you Neil & John for your advice and encouragement. I did see your errors posting a while back John and I will go back and check it again. I will probably take the plunge soon and maybe start a progress thread. Regards. Nick |

I have gained just over two years workshop experience building a Sweet Pea loco rolling chassis, cylinders etc., and I am thinking of building Westbury's Wyvern IC engine. I won't bore you with the details of why am stopping work on the Pea but would be grateful for advice on whether I would have the ability to take on a Wyvern build and if there any issues that I should be aware of. Many thanks. Nick PS: Workshop kit includes Tom Senior Mill and Boxford lathe. Edited By Nick T on 01/04/2018 17:02:50 |

Thanks Nigel for the information and thank you also for the offer of a casting if it all goes pear shaped - it is much appreciated. How did you machine yours? Nick |

Hi All. I am just about to start machining the faces of the expensive cylinder castings for my 5" gauge Sweet Pea steam loco. The book suggests fly cutting on the lathe but as I have a Tom Senior Vertical Light mill I would rather use that. Would one of these 25mm carbide tipped tools be OK for the job? Any help and advice would be most welcome. Thanks, Nick

Thread: Linisher Advice Please |
01/03/2017 22:02:23 |
I just wanted to say a big thank you for everyone's advice about buying a linisher. Mine turned up today and I spent the evening using it in the workshop. All I can say is that I don't know how I coped without it! Actually I do know - lots of filing. Nick Edited By Nick T on 01/03/2017 22:02:43 |

Thank you all for your helpful comments and advice. I went for the 100 mm wide version and managed to pick up a Kobe version HERE for £75.00 less another 15% discount that has since disappeared off the site, making a final price of £63.00 including free delivery. Can't be bad! Now off to look for some high tech belts as recommended by Jason. Once again thank you all. Nick Edited By Nick T on 26/02/2017 13:21:46 |

I am doing an increasing amount of work on a 5" gauge steam loco where a linisher would be very handy. I have neither the space or budget for a big machine and wondered if anybody had used something like THIS cheap and cheerful Clarke woodworking machine for metal work. Any advice welcome. Thank you. |

Thread: Advice Please - Paint for 5" Gauge Loco |
02/02/2017 15:21:14 |
Thank you all for the advice - much appreciated. I have alreday read the book thank you and will now head off to buy soem paint. I agree with you Russell about the Precision Paints Website being awful! Nick |

Morning All. I am nearing the point with my 5" Sweet Pea build where I will have to start painting it - joy. I am OK on the spray gun & air brush front but would like some advice about suitable paints. I used Paragon Paints from Stationary Engine Parts with great success on my workshop machinery but their products are only sold in relatively large tins and with fairly high postage costs. I also read somewhere that it might not be suitable for small scale. I would welcome any advice or suggestions. Thank you. Nick |

I very nearly bought a MIG welder recently but decided I couldn't justify one for the amount of work it would do (it's boring being sensible!). After much research I decided on the Clarke 135TE which will run off a UK standard 13 amp outlet and was well thought of across a wide range of forums and reviews. Worth shopping around for a better price than Machine Mart but their Web page is HERE Good luck, Nick Edited By Nick T on 15/01/2017 20:31:06 |

Chris Lyall recently built a Sweet Pea boiler for me and I went to collect it from his workshop in Leeds. Chris was recommended to me by a prolific model engineer who lives near me in Surrey and is an active member of a model engineering club with a very good reputation. I found Chris to be thoroughly professional at all times and his written correspondence is very good - not something I would say about another boiler smith I approached whose emails were cryptic to say the least. Chris doesn't pretend to have made boilers all his life but he has gone out of his way to provide a credible and professional business approach and I have no doubt that he would attend promptly to any issues that might arise with one of his products. Hi All. I am thinking about buying a 150mm rotary table. Vertex would be my first choice and comes out at about £160 for the basic table. Warco are doing this one HERE for £129 plus all the gizmos which seems too cheap. Does anyone have any experience of the Warco product. Many thanks, Nick |

Morning All. Having done a search on here I know that this is a perennial question but does anyone have experience of the Sealey SMS 2008 that retails at about £45.00 plus VAT. It gets pretty good reviews on-line. More information HERE Many thanks, Nick Edited By Nick T on 29/10/2016 12:09:25 |
