oil leak

![]() 114 forum posts 20 photos | I have finally got the 540 up and running but after running for about 30 mins it has started dripping oil from the bottom of the cross feed handle. after googling I am led to believe that there is an imperial oil seal behind the. handle. my questions are does anyone know the exact size so I can get one before I strip it and is it just a matter of taking the nut with the 2 pin spanner holes in off and pulling off the hand wheel to reveal the seal? I can not find spare part drawing showing a seal?

![]() 2110 forum posts 565 photos | Hi Bob the oil is supposed to drain back to the tank by a hose and passage ways. The system loses quite a lot of oil to drainage and you should clean all the ways and pipes as they get clogged with dust and grease like deposits especialy from the catch trays in the casting on either side inside and the steel pipes from them to the tank. If you disconnect the cylinder on the table traverse you will find that with help, three people, you can lift off the bed, carefully to not bend the rod, and you can get to other oil drains from the cylinder as well. Find something to put heavy bed on befor lifting. You can run the hydraulics with table of and see where oil is running to but operating traverse by hand. If you need any help just ask. David |

Jones and Shipman 540 Drippingand there was me getting the toast and salt and pepper ready! Anyone else got some non PC foods from the past? Martin Most of them! There is a tub of dripping in the fridge as I speak. In a similar vein, some advice to anyone visiting the Black Country Living Museum - there are two chip shops - one fries in oil, the other in dripping and is therefore far superior!! |

Black puddin' and tripe ? These soft modern types don't know the joy of a good fry-up with plenty of black and white puddin' and a load of fried bread. You might live longer by not eating food like that, but i cannot think why you would want to |

7227 forum posts 21 photos | One means of clearing a way through a blocked pipe, with bends, is to try to push a length of curtain rod through it. If the blockage is really solid,, by rotating the curtain rod, you can sometimes "driil" through Once there is a hole through, repeated "jiggling" will sometimes clear away much of the remaining clag. At least oil, or some other solvent will help to soften, maybe even dislodge, the rubbish. Once the pipe is clear, the debris needs to be removed from the machine, so that it cannot recirculate, and cause problems in the future. Howard |

he probably meant 'remove the blocks that the piston rods attach to the table with at each end'. Once they're unbolted from the table, the table is just sitting there under its own weight. |

![]() 2110 forum posts 565 photos | Hi Bob yes I meant to unscrew the blocks that fasten the cylinder rods to the bed ends. You may have to take the cover of the front of the table adjustment bits as well to get the table off. Be carful not to bend the rods. if you remove the front plate on the base as well as the tank cover you will see three hoses one is pressure from pump one is return to tank and one is drain to tank. the drain to tank should go into a small tray with a gauze to collect debris, also sometimes have some catch trays on side walls of column casting and steel drain tubes to tank. if you can remove the plate on top of the front of the table you can poke and blow out other ways that the oil drains from the control block back to tank. A nice clean job! done it quite a few times. David |
