Where can i buy the drawings for the vee-twin Hoglet engine can anyone tell me ? I stumbled across videos of this engine on Youtube and would love to build it. Any help please.

Yeah i think the brushed one was around 30 pounds, about 36 euros here. The brushless one was 99 euros.

You lads seem to forget that there are two different cordless angle grinders from Lidl. One uses a brushed motor, and is pathetic, but relatively cheap, and the other is brushless and is a much better, but more expensive machine. I was warned not to buy the very cheap one as they are gutless and the battery only lasts minutes, and instead waited until they were stocking the better model. Its been good.

Cordless tools are a god send. Not having to faff around looking for and having to use extension leads, which i always find a serious trip hazard, then finding a socket, etc. Its not too bad with one tool, but often i need to use two grinders, a drill, a welder and a welding rod quiver, the place can look like spagetti junction.

What annoys me ? The BBC, which i refuse to watch anymore, with most other channels. They became a lecturing, preachy, pc, pain in the fundament !

Did not think J&S would bother making a pump for themselves, but like electrical components would simply buy them in from a specialist company. I know of Andmar and visit their website, but like most machine tool spares companies, their website is not very good.

I will email them and see if they can help me with a few bits and bobs i need.

This is a good thread, information on The Jones and Shipman surface grinders is scarce and difficult to find. I bought a 540 last year and am waiting for this lockdown to finish, so i can get it painted and reassembled.

Does anyone happen to know if the Hydraulic pump in the base that powers the table, was made by J&S, or did they buy them in ? I need two copper gaskets for mine.

I used to machine, and fabricate and weld the 300 series stainless steels a lot. it work hardens very quickly, so you need to push on and not let the tool rub or it will become a nightmare to work.

There was a brilliant documentary about Ford on PBS a while ago, if Ford wanted to get rid of someone from his employ, he would set his thugs to bully him into leaving, and then he would be dragged into a secluded place and have the life half beaten out of them.

Buy a decent one too, the far east import ones can have dials that mean nothing. I have one here and its neither metric or imperial, i should chuck it in the bin ideally. I bought one made in California, Criterion i think and its miles better. You get what you pay for.

I have a old shortwave receiver in the shed, normally on the 20 meter amateur band. I noticed the other day when i powered up the vfd on the mill, it sent the receiver haywire, couldn't hear a thing.

I think Edison was a bit of a gangster to be honest, ethics and fair play were not things he let bother him too much.

I remember see an american advert for an ambulance chasing firm of lawyers, many years ago, and thinking how appalling it was. Someone said to me it would be like that here in years to come, and low and behold, it is. No morals or ethics. Same with this "ppi" rubbish.

Is it one of these reverse the call charges scams ? The longer you keep chatting the more you pay ?

I have a Starrett edge finder and swear by it. Use it all the time. I have a cheaper one but its not as good. if you have a look at the sururban tool channel on youtube , they do a test of the various types, the edge finder wins it i think.

I tend to agree. The modern world that everyone in power seems to be striving for, seems a boring, clinical place.

My Tom senior has a vertical head, a head without a quill and it was a pain to use. The vertical head was merely an add-on to update a machine that was outdated, a horizontal mill. Another issue to me was the huge lack of travel in the z-axis, about 4-5 inches between the cutter and the table top, maybe ok for very small work, but hopeless for anything else.

My solution was to graft a Bridgeport varispeed head onto the large cast iron overarm. Its transformed the machine completely, i have much more space under the head, can drill holes at an angle if i tip the head, its been a worthwhile project.

I think scraping as a process has been put up on a pedestal and is being worshipped as a "long lost black art" by some. I think its like filing or hand fitting or something similar, not a process that is to be feared or to be overawed by. But to be undertaken with patience and common sense.

Quite a lot of the large motor manufacturers such as mercedes, BMW etc, have factories in China to make components, or complete cars for those regions. Triumph motorcycles are touted as being made in England, but again a lot is made abroad, Malaysia and India i believe, frames, suspension components, switchgear etc. The design and engines are made in the UK.

So saying anything is rubbish because its chinese, or made in the far east is fraught with danger.
